At the Fourth Annual CARL Conference, Deborah L. Schaeffer, Access Services Librarian, CSU Los Angeles, and author of Irish Folk Music: a Selective Discography (Greenwood Press, 1989), was named CARL's 1996 Member of the Year. Deborah's involvement with CARL began in 1988, and includes the following contributions: Chair, Fourth Annual CARL Conference; member of the CARL South Program Planning Committee; member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Organization; CARL South Interest Group Coordinator; member of the CARL Second Annual Conference Program Planning Committee; CALM South Treasurer; DIAL South President; CSUL South President; member of the CSUL South 1995 Program Planning Committee; and CARLDIG South Chair. Deborah has also served as moderator for several CARL regional programs.

Deborah's contributions to the profession extend beyond CARL. She has served as a member of the ACRL Instruction to Diverse Populations Committee, Bibliographic Instruction Section; editor, assistant editor and reporter for COGNOTES, published by the ALA New Members Round Table; member of the LAMA Publications Committee, Personnel Administration Section; member of the RASD Bibliography Committee, Collection Development and Evaluation Section; member of the Library Instruction Round Table Public Relations/Membership Committee; member of the American Indian Library Association Steering Committee and editor of the American Indian Libraries Newsletter; and member of the REFORMA Social and Behavioral Sciences Librarians Network American Conference for Irish Studies.
