CRITERIA

Criteria used to select the Outstanding Member include recent service to CARL and a history of involvement in CARL.  Activities given special recognition in this regard include:

Successful program planning

Leadership in developing new goals, directions, and interests for CARL

Accomplishment of special projects

Publication on behalf of CARL

Outstanding public speaking on behalf of CARL

Guidance offered to incoming professionals

Consistent dedication to the needs of California academic and research libraries and the librarians and other staff who serve in them

While special recognition will be given to recent service and continuity, consistency of support for CARL and for the profession will also be given close attention.  Although service on the national level is given consideration, greater emphasis is placed on achievements on behalf of California academic libraries, librarians and other staff.
Members of the CARL Executive Board are not eligible for the award during their term of office.

THE COMMITTEE AND THE PROCESS

The Outstanding Member Award Committee consists of the two vice-presidents and the most recent recipient of the award.  The junior vice-president serves as chair.
Nominations are solicited from the membership in the spring and summer of each year.  Members are urged to nominate other members who meet the criteria. Nominations generally should include a brief summary of the nominee's contributions to CARL and to California academic libraries, together with the names of people who could be contacted for additional information.
The Outstanding Member Award Committee makes a recommendation to the Board of Directors at the third meeting (August or September), and the Board of Directors decides on the award.
The Outstanding Member Award consists of a commendation inscribed on a plaque, and is presented by the CARL president at a plenary session of the conference.
