Ilene F. Rockman CARL/ACRL Conference Scholarship

Purpose:

The purpose of this scholarship is to subsidize the attendance of two Library and Information Studies students to the biennial CARL conference and to subsidize the attendance of one Library and Information Studies student to the biennial ACRL conference, thus encouraging and supporting library school students in preparing for a career in academic librarianship.

Eligibility:

Any applicant who has applied for admission to a formal program of library and information studies leading to a master's degree, and has enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (or its equivalent) towards his/her degree. Applicants can be either full-time or part-time students. Membership in CARL is required before or at the time of application.

Award:

The award for the CARL Conference is $500 per student. The award for the ACRL Conference is $1000. Conference scholarship funding is intended for the costs of registration, room and transportation. Note: The award may not cover all expenses depending on the conference location.

  • Personal Statement a statement of a maximum of 350 words, double-spaced, typed and a font no smaller than 11 point, that outlines your interest in academic librarianship, speaks to the other criteria below, and addresses how your attendance at this conference will support your goals related to academic librarianship.

Criteria:

Factors considered in awarding the scholarship(s) include evidence of:

  • a commitment to a career in academic librarianship
  • a commitment to academics
  • proven leadership potential
  • financial need
  • strong communication skills
  • excellent organizational skills

Achievement in these areas may best be demonstrated by the personal statement indicating interest or work experience in an academic library, including class work, non-course educational experience, volunteer work, teaching or other relevant employment and publications. Candidates should also indicate what specific competencies or characteristics they believe they have to offer the field of librarianship, what they can bring to the profession, and in particular what they have done to demonstrate proven leadership potential and strong organizational skills. The criteria can also be demonstrated through the two professional references or vita.

Submission Deadline for the 2009 ACRL Conference Scholarship:

December 1, 2008. A completed packet is everything listed under Application. Late or incomplete packets will not be considered.
