CSU Librarians-South Meeting
November 2, 2000 at 3 p.m. held at
CSU Fullerton
Meeting chaired by Barbara Quarton
Present: Cynthia Bruns (Fullerton), Hazel Cameron
(Fullerton), Mary Crimmins (Fullerton), Judith Downie (San Marcos),
Karin Duran (Northridge), John Hickok (Fullerton), Kelly Janousek
(Long Beach), Naomi Moy (Dominguez Hills), Linda Muroi (San Diego),
Barbara Quarton (San Bernardino), Rob Sage (Fullerton), Andrew Shroyer
(Los Angeles)
Nominations for secretary:
Cynthia Bruns agreed to do it.
Chat Update: Discussion on how to organize
the chat room. John Hickok has experience with chat room and will
e-mail netiquette to Barbara Quarton, John Shroyer and Bonnie Petry.
There will be an announcement in the CARL newsletter concerning
the planned chat room. It will be November 30, 2000 at 3 p.m. Participants
will receive their password and instructions when they RSVP. After
the November chat room the decision will be made as to how often
to conduct the chat session. Barbara Quarton will check with the
CSU Librarians North to see if they are interested in participating
with these chat rooms.
Andrew Shroyers comments on the previous chat room:
There is no time for pondering questions but rather the experience
is similar to real time conservations. The chat manager job is to
try to control the direction of the discussion. Should there be
a time limit? Time limits from one to ninety minutes were discussed
with some agreement on ninety minutes as an accepted time limit.
List Serve: The advantage of a list serve
would be that one could participate at any time. A list serve might
be an especially useful tool to send out announcements. Ron Rodriguez
has just established the list serve for CARL and would know how
it is done and have the software.
Virtual Committees: This concept is designed
for librarians who are unable to come to the meetings because of
time constraints but would like to participate virtually. Kelly
Janovski related the ALA experience with virtual committees and
she felt that was necessary that there be some face-to-face meeting
with the committee members in order for virtual committees to be
really effective.
Types of Committees that might work as virtual committees
- Committee of librarians who are doing similar research
- Subject specializations (such as all CSU business librarians)
- Senior Librarians who might be interested in mentoring junior
librarians
- Offering a scholarship to encourage promising students to go
into librarianship
- A virtual committee could be used to originally plan the spring
program
Kelly Janouski recommended that we put virtual committees on mentoring
and scholarships on the agenda in the spring.
Spring Program:
When: After looking at the master calendar it was suggested
that late April or early June might be the best times to plan it.
Combining with CCLI: Judith Downie will be attending CCLI meeting
tomorrow and will present the idea of working together with that
group for the Spring program.
Suggested program ideas:
- Program on EAR (Electronic Access Resources) with Evan Reader,
followed by a program on "Techno Stress." (Only half
in jest)
- Distance learning
- How to convince publishers to standardize
- Pharos (and other Fables)
- The New Standards for Education
- Working in partnership with community Colleges
- Web CT and/or Blackboard: How it works and how to use it
- CSU and the various experiences of BI
- Year-round university experience. (It was agreed that this might
make a good chat room discussion)
Discussion of the possibility of a program in August. This idea
could be sent out to the list serve to gauge interest.
Action Items:
Judith Downie will investigate the list serve
John Hickok will send a list of netiquette to Barbara Quarton,
Andrew Shroyer and
Bonnie Petry.
Judith Downie will investigate putting together a contact list
of librarians by subject and
research topics. She will also talk to CCLI.
I may have missed something here. Did Andrew Shroyer have something
and I have gotten the correct names with the tasks?
