Water Resources Institute (WRI)
The WRI Archive documents issues of water supply, water quality, pollution, relevant legal decisions and mapping of southern California and parts of the Central Valley, with a particular interest in the Mojave Desert and the watershed area of the San Bernardino Mountains and Santa Ana River. The WRI's collection includes papers of such figures as Senator Ruben Ayala, former San Bernardino Mayor Bob Holcomb, W. P. and Joseph Rowe, consulting water engineers active across southern California from the 1920's into the 1980's, all of them devoted advocates of local water rights. The United States Geological Survey, Water Supply Papers, Professional Papers, Open File Reports, Water Resource Investigations as well as the State of California Publications of the State Water Resources Board and related materials can be consulted back to the end of the nineteenth-century. Oral histories completed so far include former San Bernardino mayor Bob Holcomb, who led the fight in the 1960's to keep the Valley water independent; and Joseph Rowe, longtime local water resources engineer. The WRI is currently working on an oral history of the Seven Oaks Dam, which will be part of a larger project, an oral history of the Santa Ana River; and an oral history of Doyle Boen, First General Manager of Eastern MWD.
