Full-Time; 40 Hours per Week; 12 Months per Year

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under direction of the Director of Library Services, performs journey level clerical and specialized duties in support of the daily operations of the District library.

POSITION DUTIES:
1. Oversees functions and workflow of library circulation/reserve department.
2. Maintains the Reserve book collection, adding titles to OPAC.
3. Posts fines and fees to college Datatel system and handles issues concerning library users’ inquires or disputes concerning fines, fees and overdue materials.
4. Hires, trains and schedules student assistants.

CLASSIFICATION RESPONSIBILITES:
*1. Performs library circulation duties for print, on-line and audio-visual materials, etc.; checks books and other materials in and out; maintains reserve collections; prepares library notices, bills and places academic holds.
*2. Provides technical oversight of assigned units of service; organizes work methods and procedures; may maintain reserve circulation and overdue area; assists in maintaining the circulation, reserve and scheduling modules of the library automation system; identifies system errors or problems; works with the appropriate areas to resolve difficulties.
*3. Handles issues concerning library users’ inquiries or disputes concerning fines, fees and overdue materials.
*4. Receives and responds to questions and requests for assistance from faculty, staff, students, and the college community, including but not limited to use of paper, electronic and online information resources or providing support services within the specialty assigned.
*5. Oversees the shelving of books and materials under the Library of Congress filing and cataloging system.
*6. Receives requests and places orders for books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, supplies and other items according to defined policies; prepares purchase requisitions; receives items ordered and checks for completeness and accuracy of order.
*7. Performs various clerical and office procedures as necessary, including answering the telephone, typing, copying and filing documents; opening and distributing mail or materials; revising or creating new forms and form letters, etc.
8. Assists patrons in locating materials and in using library equipment and systems.
9. Assists in recommending policies and developing budget requests for assigned area.
10. Assists with bindery operations, library inventory and other functions of the library as assigned.
11. Maintains library equipment and performs routine maintenance on copiers, printers and other related equipment.
12. May serve on a variety of District committees as request.
13. May perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. or equivalent and; experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of this class.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Experiences and/or training, which have influenced or prepared you to work cooperatively with and support individuals from diverse backgrounds. For example: involvement within specific programs; courses; or participation in groups and organizations, etc. that cultivate diversity.
2. Experience with library circulation systems, OPAC, various databases, Microsoft Office.
3. Hold secondary degree, .AA/BS/BA.
4. Previous experience overseeing student assistants.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: library practices, terminology and procedures; the Library of Congress System; modern office methods, procedures, equipment and computers; basic reference sources and materials; library automation systems and processes; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; and basic bookkeeping methods. Ability to: perform library journey level clerical work of average difficulty; process books and non-book media; do simple reference work and assist students in the selection of library materials; maintain order in the library; understand and follow oral and written instructions; type at a rate of 40 wpm; operate office and audio-visual equipment, including computers; work cooperatively with others; learn and interpret rules, regulations, policies and procedures; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; keep simple records; and make arithmetic calculations accurately.

PHYSICAL EFFORT / WORK CONDITIONS:
Occasional light moving of books and materials, moving of audio-visual equipment, book carts, etc.; stepping on stool or step ladder to reach for materials on shelves; walking and standing for extended periods of time. Tasks may require extended periods of time at a keyboard.

SALARY / BENEFITS:
Range 24 Step A = $2,981 per month. The District offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and family members, valued at $11,000 annually, with currently no out-of-pocket expenses to employees for monthly premiums. The package includes: Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, and an Employee Assistance Program. Additional benefits include Income Protection, the Public Employees’ Retirement Contribution (PERS), 457/403b tax shelter retirement plans, 11 accrued vacation days, 12 sick days, and 17 holidays.

STARTING DATE:
The successful applicant is expected to be available for work no later than two (2) weeks after Board approval.

PREEMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
1. This position requires a moderate amount of physical activity. A complete list of physical requirements for this position is available in the Department of Human Resources. The successful applicant will be required to complete a medical history questionnaire and must agree to undergo and pass a pre-employment physical examination prior to employment with a physician selected and paid for by the District. To be eligible for employment the successful applicant must be able to pass the physical examination based on the physical requirements. Disabilities not related to the essential physical job requirements will not preclude the applicant from being hired.
2. Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
3. As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee’s responsibility. You will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form, which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged from your first paycheck.

This screening process can take up to 3 weeks or more, after which interviews will be conducted. Meeting the minimum qualifications for a position does not assure the candidate an interview.
