Libarary Assistant II – California Maritime Academy

Full-time, 40 hr/wk, *11/12, Probationary/Permanent Position
$2805 – $4208 per month
(Expected hiring salary at lower range)

*Incumbent will work 11 months per year but be paid over 12 months

LOCATION: The campus is located in Vallejo on the north shore of the Carquinez Strait at the northeastern extreme of the San Pablo Bay, approximately 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.

DUTIES: We seek a energetic, highly motivated library assistant to staff the library’s service desk and fulfill a variety of regular library and archival operation activities. Duties include serving as primary contact for archival collections, services, and related projects; ensuring preservation of archival materials; assisting library patrons in using library services and interpreting policies; training of student assistants. Will also assist with other library operations as needed such as selection of books for the best seller collection; performing interlibrary lending/borrowing and document delivery functions; overseeing periodicals receiving; claiming and tracking materials not received; ensuring the orderliness of shelving; assisting with other library, and administrative operations as needed.

The ideal candidate will have exceptional public service and interpersonal skills, a willing attitude, a high degree of initiative and an eye for details. The Library Assistant II reports to the Library Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of general library operations, procedures, and policies as they relate to reference, circulation, ILL, and serials.
• Working knowledge and skill with personal computers and Microsoft Windows and Office Suite
• Ability to solve problems by applying past experience in handling similar issues
• Ability to work independently and make decisions in consultation with other staff when appropriate
• Ability to follow guidelines and safety practices
• Ability to communicate effective and with an ethnically and culturally diverse community
• Be neat and pay attention to detail
• Have good oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Demonstrated experience working with the public
• Willing & able to work evenings and/or weekends

Education/Experience: Three years library work experience and no post secondary education; OR two years library work experience and two years or 60 units of post secondary education; OR one year library work experience and four years or 120 units of post secondary education.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated experience of good working relations with library colleagues
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience working with a newer Integrated Library System (Dynix Horizon preferred)
• Competent in using library resources (both online and in paper)
• Demonstrated competence in assisting at a reference and/or circulation desk, preferably in an academic library
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Typical office environment, equipment and tasks; work at public service desk, regular keyboarding and use of personal computer; ability to lift and move 25 pounds in a safe manner; shelve and process library materials and supplies, loading copiers, printers and readers; must be able to sit, read, and analyze for extended periods of time.
