Brief Description:
Under the direction of the Learning Resource Center Director, perform a variety of library clerical tasks related to receiving, processing and circulation of library reading and audio/visual materials.

Job Duties:
Check in and out a variety of materials including books, pamphlets, catalogs, tapes, compact disks and records to patrons at circulation desk; issue library cards as appropriate. E

Assist students, staff and community patrons at circulation and periodicals desk; answer routine questions regarding library facilities; assist patrons with operation of copies, microfilm reader and printers. E

Process overdue notices; calculate, collect and record library fines for lost or overdue materials; issue receipts for fines paid. E

Process incoming materials including books, newspapers, college catalogs, compact disks and records, microfilm and periodicals; stamp articles; affix security strips; prepare materials for shelving. E

Shelve materials according to established procedures; check condition of materials and cards; remove damaged articles for repair; repair damaged and worn articles as appropriate.

Operate a variety of library and office equipment such as telephone, typewriter, security, computer, copier, tape recorders, microfilm reader and printer and microfiche readers. E

Train and provide work direction to student workers as assigned. E

Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplicating, typing and maintaining records statistical records regarding circulation or library activities. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and one year clerical experience including some experience in a library.

Knowledge Of:

  • General clerical principles and practices.
  • Modern office practices, procedures and equipment.
  • Record keeping techniques.
  • Telephone techniques and etiquette.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Ability To:

  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Learn to interpret, apply and explain library rules and procedures.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, duplications, typing and maintaining simple records.
  • Operate a variety of library and office equipment such as telephone, typewriter, security, computer, copier, tape recorders, microfilm reader and printer and microfiche readers.
  • Keyboard/type at 35 net words per minute from clear copy.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Train and provide work direction to others.
    Physical Abilities Hearing and speaking to communicate with library patrons.
  • Seeing to read library materials.
  • Reaching horizontally and above the shoulder to shelve and retrieve books.
  • Carrying and lifting books.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Pulling and pushing book carts.
  • Bending at the waist to retrieve and shelve books on shelves.

Work Week/Hours
Saturday’s only, from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

This 10 month, 17.5% position will be at Moorpark College.

The eligibility list being established will be used to fill full-time and part-time positions in this classification up to one year throughout the Ventura County Community College District.

Required Selection Process:
PRELIMINARY SCREENING OF APPLICATIONS & SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE
In completing the application and the supplemental questionnaire (if required), outline in detail your education, training (such as classes, seminars, workshops) and experience. Application materials will be screened by a committee of subject matter experts, who will recommend candidates for participation in the oral examination process. Appearance before the oral examination board will be limited to the candidates with the highest written and/or screening scores. Date of Oral Examination to be scheduled following the completion of the written and/or screening examination process. Proof of veteran’s preference must be presented at the time of the oral examination.

ELIGIBILITY LIST
Upon completion of the examination, the open / promotional eligibility list will be compiled by combining the screening score, oral score, and applicable seniority and veteran’s credits, if any. The candidates will be ranked according to their total score on the eligibility list. Certification will be made from the highest three ranks of the open / promotional eligibility list. This eligibility list will be used to fill the current vacancies up to one year from the date of the oral examination.

APPOINTMENTS
The candidate selected will be recommended by the Chancellor to the Governing Board for final approval.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD
All appointments made from eligibility lists for initial appointment or for promotion shall be probationary for a period of six months.

Salary Range: $2,960.00 – $4,092.00

Computerized multiple choice examination, Weighted 40%
Oral Examination, Weighted 60%
Keyboarding Skills Examination, 35 nwpm, (Pass / Fail)

An original typing/keyboarding certificate issued within the past year will be accepted and must be submitted at the time of filing application. Applicants previously tested through the VCCCD Human Resources Department within the past year and who have a passing score should indicate such at time of filing.
