Public Services/Reference Librarian, California Institute of Integral Studies

The Institute: The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), accredited by WASC, offers master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology, religion, philosophy, Asian and comparative studies, cultural and social anthropology, women’s spirituality, and integral studies; it also has a bachelor’s degree completion program. The Institute has just over 1000 students, mostly in its graduate programs. The Library holds about 35,000 items, and offers an increasing number of public and reference services. Its catalog and circulation system are currently available through the Winnebago Spectrum system but are projected to change in the near future.

The Position: This is a full time position with some evening and weekend hours are required, reporting to the Library Director, the Public Services / Reference Librarian shall use a high level of technical, instructional, bibliographic, and interpersonal skills to fulfill the following responsibilities:

1. Managing Circulation services, including hiring, scheduling, training and supervising student circulation assistants, and attendant work-study budgets; contributing to setting our circulation and public services policies; and some liaison activities with counterparts in consortial libraries.
2. Organizing and managing academic reserve collections in both traditional paper and electronic formats; and in supporting faculty’s use of these systems.
3. Working closely with the Systems Librarian and the Cataloger to improve access and usability of the Library’s OPAC.
4. Working closely with the other three members of the reference team to provide individual and group research assistance to library users (from bachelor’s completion through faculty level) at the reference desk; to devise instructional and informational programs; and to review reference collections and online resources.
5. Working as a member of the library team, and undertaking related tasks as appropriate; also participating in staff committees for CIIS as appropriate.
6. Staying current with advances in applicable library technology and with relevant issues; advising colleagues and director on developments in these areas, and making recommendations for library action when appropriate.

Qualifications:
1. Master’s degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited program is required.
2. Minimum of two years related professional experience in reference and/or public services departments is required, preferably in an academic library.
3. Supervisory experience, outstanding communication and customer service skills are all required; demonstrated managerial skills are preferred
4. Experience with library reference services is required; demonstrated excellence in reference services is highly desirable.
5. Technical experience with managing circulation system records and/or administering remote authentication required.
6. Familiarity with psychology or another area of the Institute’s curriculum is desirable.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range from $43,000 – $48,000 annually, depending on experience; Benefits are available.
