POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Academy Librarian and the direct supervision of the User Services Librarian and the Library Assistant III-Interlibrary Loan, the Library Assistant II performs a range of duties relating to the maintenance of library collections. The incumbent may work in one or more of the following functional areas: identification and acquisition of library materials, preparation and organization of library materials, bibliographic searching and retrieval, serials processing, circulation and lending, and reference and information services. This is a 30-hour a week position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Search catalogs and databases for bibliographic records.
• Perform preliminary edits of cataloging records.
• Prepare new library materials for circulation, including creating item records, barcoding, covering and spine labeling.
• Page, scan and ship interlibrary loan materials.
• Receive and claim serials.
• Maintain records of serial subscriptions.
• Correct and update records in the library’s online catalog.
• Assist library patrons with first-level reference queries.
• Supervise volunteers.
• Follow all Academy safety regulations.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
• At least two years of undergraduate education; or Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college (Library technician training preferred).
• One year of library experience, including working with an integrated library system; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Practical working knowledge of computers, including file management, word processing, and online catalogs.
• Ability to work with foreign language materials
• Ability to perform routine and sometimes repetitive clerical duties with consistent precision and accuracy.
• Understanding of current and historical library cataloging conventions.
• Ability to give directions to volunteers.
• Ability to work tactfully with Academy staff, the public, and Academy volunteers.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups or individuals.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS: Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a full-time, 30-hour a week position. This position is eligible for excellent medical & dental benefits; as well as participation in a supplemental retirement annuity and flexible spending accounts.
