Evening Closer, Loan & Course Reserves Unit, Access Services, Stanford University Libraries

This is a 6 month fixed term position.

The Stanford University Libraries seeks a flexible, personable, service-oriented staff member to join the evening team at the Green Library.

About Stanford:

Our libraries consist of a main Humanities branch (Green Library), an instructional computing center (Meyer Library), and fourteen research branch libraries serving the sciences and engineering, social sciences, and humanities and area studies.

Schedule:

Academic Year: Sunday-Thursday, 6:20pm-3:20am

Summer Term: Sunday-Thursday, 1:20 pm-10:20pm

Intersession: Monday-Thursday, 1:20 pm-10:20pm; 8 hrs TBD

During exam periods, the library may extend its hours. All work schedules are subject to change due to departmental need and scheduled library hours.

Job Objective:

To provide quality public service to the patrons of Stanford University at the circulation desk, library entrances and through technical/clerical duties.

Responsibilities:
Public Service

Reporting to the LSIII Evening Supervisor, the LSII Evening Closer provides excellent public service to our patrons at three service desks. Duties include charging and discharging materials, taking fine payments and looking up information on patron and book records. Candidate must deal with difficult patron situations in a professional and courteous manner, while maintaining patron confidentiality.

In absence of supervisor, the Evening Closer is responsible for building emergencies and other situations which arise. This position serves as one of two building closers, securing the building at closing time, clearing patrons, and reporting issues to the supervisor, library facilities and/or police/fire.

Additionally, the LSII Evening Closer performs a number of non-public technical duties when not assigned to the desk.

Technical/Clerical
The Evening Closer will perform vital duties to support the teaching mission of Stanford University, including:

o New books – make shelf-ready or available for requesting patrons.
o Searches – check library stacks for missing materials and notify patrons when items are found.
o Recalls and holds – place manually for requested materials.
o Process returns for Stanford Auxiliary Library 3, our off-campus storage facility.
o Record statistics on all appropriate processes and activities.
o Answer telephones.
o In absence of normally-assigned staff, serve as backup for various processing tasks, including ordering department supplies and preparing signage for Access Services.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications or Requirements:

Required:

• Previous experience in public service, preferably library or related:
o Work effectively with the public at a busy service desk.
o Excellent attendance record and flexibility to change work schedule.
• Ability to handle a high volume of work with accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to successfully handle multiple priorities.
• Ability to adapt and concentrate despite frequent interruptions.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both oral and written.
• Ability to work in a team-effort setting.
• Ability to handle highly confidential material with discretion.
• Ability to work at a computer terminal for at least 4 hours per day.
• Ability to tolerate repetitive physical tasks.
• Ability to use PC-based applications, including internet, Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and sundry applications.
• Ability to lift heavy items (up to 20 lbs) and push and pull heavy book carts (up to 250 lbs).

Desired:
• Knowledge of the structure and organization of SUL and Stanford.
• Experience in an academic library and with online circulation systems.
• Experience closing or securing libraries or other facilities.
