CSULB ( www.csulb.edu) is a vibrant, comprehensive urban university with an enrollment of approximately 35,000 students, and the one of the largest campuses in the 23-member CSU system. Located near the ocean in Long Beach, the fifth largest city in California, the 320-acre campus offers a beautifully landscaped, garden-like setting, an excellent physical plant, and outstanding instructional facilities enhanced by attractive, innovative, and aesthetically pleasing architecture and design. The University Library (www.csulb.edu/library) has a collection of 1.4 million volumes, participates in local and regional consortia, and provides access to an expanding number of electronic information resources through its Innovative Interfaces integrated library system. The library facility has recently undergone a major remodel which included significant improvements in infrastructure and the opening of a 190 seat computer lab.

California State University, Long Beach Library seeks an innovative, energetic, creative, knowledgeable, and experienced library leader to serve as its Associate Dean for Information Services and Technology. This individual needs to possess flexibility, tact, political acumen, initiative, tolerance for ambiguity, and the ability to flourish in a rapidly changing environment and to foster that capacity in others. Reporting directly to the Dean, the Associate Dean serves as the Dean’s representative and provides leadership in the integration and coordination of library daily operations, the adoption and use of information technology to enhance library services, and the facilitation of faculty personnel issues.

Responsibilities:

Monitoring and facilitating the operations of key library service units: Access Services, Information Programs, Technical Services/Special Collections

Facilitating the assignment and governance of the library faculty; acting as the liaison with the Division of Academic Affairs for faculty personnel matters, working with faculty committees involved in recruitment and evaluation

In collaboration with the Office of Academic Technology, assuming supervision and oversight of the Library technology services and projects, including, but not limited to the Millennium integrated library system, electronic reserves, databases, interlibrary loan, and digitization of theses

Drafting, presenting, and implementing policy documents related to library operations

Serving as the library’s chief administrator in the absence of the Dean with his full authority

This is a full-time senior management (Administrator III) position carrying retreat rights to faculty rank and salary.

Qualifications

Required:

Masters degree in library science from an ALA accredited program

Successful completion of at least five years of progressively responsible experience in leadership, management , and supervisory role in an academic or research library

Experience in working collaboratively, respectfully, and collegially with library faculty, staff, and users

Demonstrated ability to work in a shared governance environment

Demonstrated commitment to diversity; the ability to communicate with/relate to an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community

Evidence of the ability to fulfill the scholarly and service requirements of a position that carries retreat rights to a faculty rank

Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, analytical, time-management, and communication skills

Desired:

Extensive knowledge of library and information technology, especially the Innovative Millennium system

Experience in implementing technology to effectively improve library operations

Demonstrated skills in managing people and organizations

Experience working in a collective bargaining environment

Additional advanced degree (MS, MA, MPA, MBA, PhD, or EdD)

Manifestation of a commitment to service excellence

Record of significant involvement and leadership in library professional organizations

Salary Range: Placement on the Administrator III range will depend upon qualifications and experience
