Full-time, tenure-track 10 month RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the Dean of learning Resources and Extended Services the Reference/Instructional Services Librarian will provide general reference assistance, and participate in the further development and expansion of library instructional programs on the AVC campus. This position will also focus on extending reference and instructional service to other campus sites using current distance education technologies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of a Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment.
- Possession of a Master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in a discipline reasonably related to the faculty member’s assignment and possession of a Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in the discipline of the faculty member’s assignment or the equivalent (See Supplemental Equivalency Request Form)
- Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited institution
- At least two years of experience as a professional public-services librarian.
- Knowledge of and experience with standard reference and research tool, especially online subscription databases and the internet.
- Experience integrating technology into reference and instructions.
- Commitment to teaching and to the philosophy of the community college
- Knowledge of current information technologies as they apply to reference, instructional services, and distance education
- Knowledge of HTML coding or an HTML editor, such as Dreamweaver
- Experience in collection development
- Experience teaching workshops and/or credit classes using current presentation technologies
- Excellent oral, written and presentational communications skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and collegial working relationships with students, staff, faculty administrators
DUTIES:
- Provides reference assistance to students, faculty, staff and community users
- Suggests search strategies and guides users in the use of Web-based subscription databases, the internet and the online public catalog.
- Participates in the evaluation and selection of electronic information resources.
- Creates and teaches research methods workshops
- May teach credit classes in Library Studies.
- Plans and presents workshops for faculty and staff.
- Selects resources for the Library’s collections in cooperation with librarians and faculty.
- In cooperation with the electronic resources librarian, may participate in the further development of the library Web site.
- Designs library research tutorial and other instructional materials.
- Plans and implements library instructional services in Palmdale and other remote locations.
- Assists in the development of library policies and procedures.
- Keeps abreast of developments in fields of library and information science and performs other duties as required by contract and general library and institutional needs.
