One full-time, tenure-track faculty position beginning July 1, 2008. Annual on-duty days will be 195. Salary placement will be on the academic salary schedule, plus a 1.10 differential. The standard work week for librarians is forty (40) hours with fifteen (15) hours assigned at the reference desk including the following: one-on-one student contact reference assistance, instructing students in Library Science courses, and teaching discipline-specific orientations. Five (5) hours are used for preparation and student evaluation. An additional fifteen (15) hours are designated for library-wide support in areas of specialization such as Technical Services Librarian, Instructional Services Librarian, Electronic Resources Librarian, SEC Site Librarian and Display Coordinator, and Collection Development Librarian. The remaining five (5) hours are for collegial governance and departmental activities. While the individual selected for this position may be required to serve at any district facility during any hours of operation, the principal position assignment will be at the Oceanside Campus Library and Information Hub. PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Dean of Academic Information Services, the Instruction and Outreach Librarian will administer and deliver a program of information literacy instruction for the college as a whole, and lead the establishment of a library presence at the Community Learning Center (CLC). This position will also work cooperatively with the librarians at both campuses to provide reference service, library instruction, and collection development.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Coordinate curriculum design for the library’s credit and non-credit instruction program. Collaborate with the Emerging Technologies Librarian to develop and deliver online library instruction. Conduct assessment of information literacy student learning outcomes for the instructional program. Coordinate library services for the Community Learning Center (CLC) and library support for the basic skills program. Act as a liaison with local area high schools to facilitate student transition to college-level research skills. Provide reference service and library instruction. Participate in the college-wide collection development process for print and non-print materials. Adherence to all District policies and procedures is expected.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. A Master’s degree in Library Science or in Library and Information Science; OR a valid appropriate California credential authorizing service as a librarian in a community college; OR the equivalent.
  2. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful experience in academic librarianship and library instruction, and the ability to relate to students and other library users with widely varying backgrounds.
  • Current experience in the use of Internet-based general reference sources, such as ProQuest and subscription databases.
  • Professional academic reference experience.
  • Knowledge of HTML and experience in developing web based instruction.
  • The ability to work cooperatively with other members of the library staff and faculty.

  3. a current resume or curriculum vitae summarizing the applicant’s educational background and experience;
  4. transcripts of ALL college coursework (legible photocopies are acceptable but must indicate that the degree has been awarded); applicants whose qualifying degree is in progress but will be awarded before the position begins must include a written statement from their advisor indicating anticipated degree completion date; foreign transcripts must be accompanied by a detailed evaluation from a formal evaluation agency;
  5. three (3) current letters of professional recommendation written within the last two years of the date of application, and specific to this type of position (letters must be signed and dated to be considered valid).

Applicants wishing to claim equivalency to the minimum qualifications must also submit a completed Supplemental Equivalency Request form* with the application packet.

The selection process may include a written exercise, teaching demonstration, as well as interviews. Individuals invited to interview will cover expenses for their first trip to the campus.

An offer of employment to the person selected for this position is contingent upon: 1) successful completion of a pre-placement physical exam at district expense, 2) TB clearance, 3) proof of eligibility to work in the United States, and 4) fingerprint clearance.

Salary policy and fringe benefits:

Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based on education and years of experience. The maximum initial placement for experience is step 7. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.

WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION:

Primarily works in indoor library environment; constant contact with adult students; may work at any college location during day and/or evening hours.

PHYSICAL EFFORT OF THE POSITION:

Primarily sedentary with frequent standing and walking, and intermittent bending or stooping; occasional light lifting, carrying, pulling and/or pushing of objects weighing 25 pounds or less; intermittent light repetitive use of hands, wrists, shoulders and forearms while keyboarding, mousing and/or writing; visual concentration; travel and/or drive to a variety of locations on and off campus as needed to conduct district business.
