Systems & Reference Librarian

California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) in San Francisco is a pioneer in integrative higher education, providing interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, and applied studies in psychology, philosophy, religion, cultural anthropology, transformative studies and leadership, integrative health, and the arts. The school offers master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as a Bachelor of Arts completion degree.

The Library holds about 54,000 items, hosts a website through which it links to an increasing number of online resources and services (http://library.ciis.edu), and offers extensive reference services and a growing instructional program. The Library’s catalog and circulation system is currently available through Winnebago / Sagebrush Spectrum, but replacement with a new ILS is intended in the future. Library staff currently includes five professionals, three part-time paraprofessionals, and several student assistants.

The Systems & Reference Librarian reports to the Library Director.

UNIQUE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Systems Librarian)
• Serving as primary technical support for Library staff and patrons on connectivity to research databases, online electronic journals, and proxy server.
• Primary responsibility for maintaining library automation, including Library’s catalog and circulation system.
• Maintaining, updating, developing and evaluating the Library’s extensive Web site.
• Serving as liaison with library software and online/electronic resource providers, gathering pertinent information, identifying opportunities and problems, and proposing solutions.
• Providing timely and accurate oral and written information on how to utilize electronic and online resources and of changing techniques, resources, and technologies in this area. Providing reports on electronic and online resource usage and costs and/or working with vendors to acquire comparable usage information.
• Organizing and managing academic reserve collections in electronic format; and supporting faculty’s use of that system by preparing notices, handouts, and forms, both paper and Web-based and serving as point of contact.
• On a day-to-day basis, serving as liaison to the Institute’s Information Technology Services unit; and serving as Library’s channel of communication on repairs and upkeep of computer equipment.

SHARED JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (as part of Reference team)
• Providing individual and group research assistance to Library patrons at the reference desk, over the telephone and through email.
• Participate in designing instructional and informational programs, preparing and revising appropriate handouts and online materials, and devising methods to communicate with Library patrons (such as the Library blog, online education platforms, etc.).
• Serving as backup for circulation and interlibrary loan.
• Participating in Library staff meetings and working as a member of the Library team.
• Staying current with advances in applicable library technology and online and electronic resources; advising colleagues and director on developments in these areas, and making recommendations for Library action when appropriate.
• Undertaking related tasks as appropriate.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required:
1. Master’s degree in library/information services from an ALA-accredited program.
2. Minimum of two years of related technical and professional experience, preferably in an academic library.
3. Working knowledge of website creation tools (e.g., Dreamweaver), and demonstrated experience in library web design / maintenance.
4. Outstanding communication and customer service skills.
5. Available to work, as needed, on some evenings until 7pm and some weekend days.

Preferred:
1. Demonstrated reference and/or teaching skills.
2. Experience with providing reference services to graduate students, faculty, researchers and/or professionals.
3. Experience in writing library information technology policies (e.g., copyright) and in negotiating online resource contracts.
4. A background in psychology or other areas of the Institute’s curriculum.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: $48-55K, DOE. Medical, dental, 401K, VSP plan for optical, chiropractic and acupuncture benefits. Employees are also enrolled in short and long-term disability benefits at no cost to you. Our employees work in a casual work environment and receive two weeks vacation plus three floating holidays, as well as receiving an additional week off in December.
