The California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), accredited by WASC, offers master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology, religion, philosophy, Asian and comparative studies, cultural and social anthropology, women’s spirituality, and integral studies; it also has a bachelor’s degree completion program. The Institute has nearly 1500 students, mostly in its graduate programs. The Library holds about 55,000 items, and offers an increasing number of public and reference services. Its catalog and circulation system are currently available through the Winnebago Spectrum system but are intended to change in the near future.
Reporting to the Library Director, the Public Services / Reference Librarian shall use a high level of technical, instructional, bibliographic, and interpersonal skills to fulfill the following responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Serving as primary technical support for Library staff and patrons on research databases, online electronic journals, and library automation (including Library’s catalog and circulation system, z39.50 server and proxy server).
• Maintaining, updating, developing and evaluating the Library’s extensive Web site.
• Serving as liaison with library software and online/electronic resource providers, gathering pertinent information, identifying opportunities and problems, and proposing solutions.
• Providing individual and group research assistance to Library patrons, from bachelor’s completion through faculty level, at the reference desk, over the telephone and through email. As a member of the reference team, participate in designing instructional and informational programs.
• Playing a key role in the process of acquiring and implementing a new library ILS.
• On a day-to-day basis, serving as liaison to the Institute’s Information Technology Services unit; and serving as Library’s channel of communication on repairs and upkeep of computer equipment.
• Staying current with advances in applicable library technology and online and electronic resources; advising colleagues and director on developments in these areas, and making recommendations for Library action when appropriate.
• Providing timely and accurate oral and written information on how to utilize electronic and online resources and of changing techniques, resources, and technologies in this area. Providing reports on electronic and online resource usage and costs, on a regular (annual or other) and timely basis.
• Serving as backup for circulation and interlibrary loan.
• Participating in Library staff meetings and working as a member of various staff teams.
• Undertaking related tasks as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
1. Master’s degree in library/information services from an ALA-accredited program.
2. Minimum of two years’ related technical and professional experience, preferably in an academic library.
3. Outstanding communication and customer service skills.
4. Familiarity with library software and applications. Please give us specific details of the following, including product names and your level of involvement with them:
a) Integrated Library Systems
b) OCLC copy cataloging and/or interlibrary loan functions
c) Web authoring programs
d) Creation and/or maintenance of web forms for library purposes
e) Remote user authorization (e.g., proxy authentication programs)
5. Available to work some weekend days, as needed.
Preferred:
1. Demonstrated teaching skills.
2. Experience in writing library information technology policies (e.g., copyright) and in negotiating online resource contracts.
3. Experience working directly with library open source applications and/or open source platforms (e.g., Linux).
4. Familiarity with library digitization issues and technologies
5. A background in one or more areas of the Institute’s curriculum.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $48-55K, DOE.
