Director of College Library Services
California Design College, a nationally accredited, Los Angeles based design college is one of the Art Institutes, America’s leader in postsecondary career-oriented education for the creative arts. We offer Bachelor degrees in Interior Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design and Interactive Media, Set and Exhibit Design, and Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. Growth in our student population has resulted in an opportunity for the new position of Director of Library Services.
This position will initially support 7 core academic programs and a student body of approximately of 900; however with the relocation of the school to new facilities in early 2009 and continued growth, student population is expected to increase dramatically and a number of additional programs will be added.
Key job elements of this position include:
• Vision, Promotion and Committee Participation: Create the vision and strategic plan to enhance and actively promote the library and its resources to school stakeholders and represent the library in the library committee.
• Supervise and provide library services which may include reference service, circulation, bibliographic instruction (including electronic and Internet) and interlibrary loan.
• Technical Services: Supervise and provide library technical services including cataloging, material processing, and equipment maintenance.
• Personnel Supervision: Select, train, and guide library service personnel.
• Budget and Planning: Provide a library collection that meets the curriculum needs and requirements of accrediting agencies. This will be done through long range planning and working within budgetary constraints.
• Act as lead in the planning and design of the new campus library.
• Collection Development: Select and maintain a collection of learning resources in variety of formats those supports the mission of the Institute. This may include replacing volumes, weeding of the collection, assessing technology based resources and tools, and prioritizing purchases.
• Professional Development: Maintain awareness of industry trends and seek opportunities for professional development.
Candidates must have a Masters Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school as well as:
• Minimum 5 years experience working in a library in a corporate, academic institution or two-year college with supervisory and management accountabilities
• Must possess excellent oral, written communication and presentation skills
• Exceptional organizational and planning skills
• Familiarity with collection development
• Knowledge of OPAC’s, OCLC, MARC records and current technologies
