Saint Mary’s College invites applications for a part-time hourly Assistant Librarian in Reference & Instruction for fourteen (14) to fifteen (15) hours each week for ten (10) months between September and June. Work in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse campus environment. Effectively communicate with a diverse community of faculty, staff, students, alumni and donors. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the mission of the College, which is informed, animated and expressed through its Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.

Reporting to the Coordinator of Reference Services, the Assistant Librarian is a public services position which provides an opportunity for a creative, student-centered reference/instruction librarian to play a role in the interpretation, and use of library resources. As a member of the Reference and Instruction Teams the successful candidate will provide reference service to a diverse campus community through regularly scheduled reference desk hours, email, “Ask a Librarian” service, and “Instant Messaging.” The Assistant Librarian will also participate in evening and weekend reference service, and may participate in the Library’s information literacy instruction program including instruction for freshmen English Composition students and general introductions to the library for various other student groups. The position may also include additional responsibilities based upon the Library’s needs and the successful candidate’s qualifications and interests. May be asked to work on special projects as assigned by the Department Head or Dean for Academic Resources, attends library, campus and external meetings and workshops relevant to the position and the Library and College mission.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in library science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent required and at least one (1) year library experience in higher education or in similar settings, along with a commitment to delivering high quality, student-centered reference and instruction service.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently, to function productively in a group and ability to work well in a team environment is essential.
• Strong interest in working with both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as with faculty and staff in a collegial environment.
• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with all elements of a culturally diverse community.
• A good sense of humor and ability to work flexible hours.
• Demonstrated successful experience providing reference and/or instructional services in an academic or research library environment, with demonstrated computer-based skills and knowledge of Web technologies (highly desirable).
