Saint Mary’s College invites applications for a full-time exempt Assistant Librarian, Cataloging & Reference) at the Saint Albert Library to handle cataloging, and catalog maintenance, reference services and collection development. Work in a highly collaborative and culturally diverse campus environment and communicate with a diverse community of faculty, staff and students and other Library users. The succesful candidate will be expected to contribute to the mission of the College, which is informed, animated and expressed through its Catholic, Lasallian and Liberal Arts traditions.

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the Assistant Librarian, catalogs and classifies library materials in all formats. Actively manages authority control of bibliographic records in the online catalog, and implements other system checks for quality control and enhanced access. Provides reference services through regular weekly shifts at the Reference Desk and occasional off-desk reference. Participates in policy and planning decisions within the Cataloging unit, and as a member of various Library functional teams. Some responsibilities in collection development and/or library instruction may also be assigned, depending on the qualifications of the incumbent and the needs of the Library.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master’s degree in Library Science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association required.
• Demonstrated experience in an academic library setting highly desirable.
• Working knowledge of the OCLC cataloging system, national cataloging rules, Library of Congress subject heading and authority practice; knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System; familiarity with online resources for cataloging and reference; demonstrated computer skills and experience with use of the Internet, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills required.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff, faculty and external parties is an important component of the position as is an excellent customer service orientation; ability to provide clear instructions to others, both oral and written; accurate spelling, grammar and vocabulary are prerequisites.
