The Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) are seeking qualified candidates for the position described below. Responsibilities:

• Serve as subject specialist for economics and political science, with possible future responsibility for an additional social science, depending on Library needs. Responsibilities include assessment, development, selection and management of research collections and information resources in all formats in support of the research and teaching needs of the relevant academic departments and programs. Serve as primary liaison between SULAIR and the relevant academic departments.
• Identify, assess, and select, in coordination with Social Science Data & Software (SSDS), numeric and spatial datasets relevant to the research and teaching needs of the disciplines assigned.
• Provide assistance and information to faculty and students about data and spatial resources, and refer them, where appropriate to SSDS or Branner GIS.
• Identify relevant resources for digitization projects, and work in collaboration with relevant units (e.g., Digital Library Systems and Services) to manage implementation and completion.
• In cooperation with the Department of Special Collections, identify, assess and acquire archival and manuscript materials relevant to the research and instructional needs of assigned departments and programs.
• Evaluate existing collections for appropriate storage, preservation, and conservation treatment.
• Collaborate with other subject specialists and, as appropriate other Stanford Libraries (e.g., Business, Law) to provide coverage of interdisciplinary areas outside of conventional subject boundaries.
• Participate in development activities in support of the Libraries, including fundraising, grant writing, and donor relations.
• Provide advanced reference, research assistance, outreach services, and instruction for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty in the disciplines assigned.
• Prepare interpretive materials to enhance access to the collections, including Web pages for the SULAIR Web site and the use of innovative methods and technologies.
• May supervise the work of one or more bibliographic assistants.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Substantial knowledge of or experience in research libraries, including substantial collection development work in the social sciences.
• MLS degree (ALA accredited), or the equivalent in training and experience.
• M.A. degree in a social science, preferably political science or economics.
• Demonstrated knowledge of numeric and spatial/GIS data resources and tools and their use in research.
• Demonstrated awareness of government information content and resources.
• Experience with current technologies and information systems, and their application to the delivery of library services to students and faculty.
• Demonstrated skills in effective written and oral communication.
• Demonstrated skills to work independently as well as in a team environment.

Preferred:

• Ph.D. degree in a social science, preferably political science or economics.
• Working knowledge of quantitative, qualitative, and spatial/GIS methods and software in social science research and instruction.
• Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
• Successful experience in providing public services and library instruction.
• Demonstrated supervisory and team-leadership skills.
