Chief Information Officer
After a decade of rapid growth in information technology on our campus, Whittier College intends to create “Information Services,” a thoughtful merger of the Library, Academic Computing and Administrative Computing, with an eye to both continued growth and need in these areas. We are seeking a Chief Information Officer (CIO) to organize in this initiative.
Information Services will support students, faculty, staff and administrators in the key missions and functions of the college through the effective deployment of information technology and services. The CIO will be responsible for the oversight of fundamental resources such as the college library, administrative computing and back-end systems, networking, telephony, academic computing, and media services.
Holding an integrated position joining the forces of the current Library, Academic Computing and Administrative Computing areas, the CIO will report to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of Faculty.
Essential duties:
Provide strategic leadership transcending both library and information technology cultures to create a 21st century environment for teaching, learning and research;
Lead in developing and continuing innovative technologies that support teaching and learning. A solid vision and understanding of technology in the service of pedagogy is vital;
Manage the activities of newly combined departments consisting of 20 employees, foster professional development, and promote teamwork and cooperation within Information Services and with other campus constituencies;
Develop and implement information technology and library and policies and procedures that meet user, legal, and regulatory needs;
Continue the development of a robust and reliable technology infrastructure;
Represent the college’s library and information technology interests regionally, statewide and nationally;
Plan and administer the department’s annual operating budget to optimize the use of available resources.
Maintain awareness of trends in library and information industries and services and higher education. Serves as appropriate in leadership capacities in these areas.
Establish priorities for addressing library and technology facilities needs. Oversee the maintenance and improvement of these various facilities, including large-scale projects.
Field concerns of different user groups and prioritize competing needs and requests.

Familiarity with major academic Library and IT functions including but not limited to:
Network telephone, and server infrastructure and services
Instructional and administrative technologies and support services
Desktop support
Serials, acquisitions, and collections management
Integrated library systems
Minimum requirements:
Advanced degree in library science, computer science, information systems or a related field plus at least five years of library and IT experience with a minimum of three years in a managerial role leading a cross-functional team.
