About the Position

The Associate Dean for User Services, Research and Scholarly Resources, supports the San Jose State University Library’s mission and goals by providing high level leadership in developing and enhancing library operations. The Associate Dean must work successfully with faculty, staff, students, and other administrators to articulate and implement the Library’s mission, vision, and philosophy. The Associate Dean exhibits solid management skills, effectiveness in resource management, and the ability to build partnerships within the University, throughout the California State University system and with the San Jose Public Library community. The Associate Dean exhibits a clear understanding of California and national trends in education, with emphasis on management of library service operations and library collections.

The Associate Dean serves on the Dean’s Senior Management Team and is in charge of the Library in the Dean’s absence. The Associate Dean works with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Digital Futures, and the Library’s Administrative Officer, and supervises Reference and Academic Services, Access Services, Collection Development, Special Collections, Library Instruction, and the Scholarly Communication Initiative. The Associate Dean is committed to deeply infusing the value of diversity and inclusive excellence.

The Associate Dean collaborates with the San Jose Public Library (SJPL) to implement a shared vision and to effectively offer quality services and resources to both the University and the broader San Jose community. This position works in close partnership with SJPL management to coordinate services and operations within the merged Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library (King Library). The Associate Dean manages employees within a collective bargaining environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

- Providing leadership for the University Library’s user services, research program and scholarly resources.
- Developing and supporting partnerships and ties with various constituencies including the University and its Colleges, the University Library Board, and the community of the City of San Jose to achieve excellence in the Library’s instructional, service and research mission.
- Communicating information about digital initiatives, and innovative uses of emerging technology to Library faculty, staff and managers and to the University community.
- Supervising Access Services, Special Collections, liaison librarian teams, and Reference and Academic Services.
- Supervising major functions of the library including collection development, reference, information literacy, digital repository and scholarly communication in collaboration with faculty librarians.
- Partnering with San José Public Library managers to coordinate services and operations. May also serve as SJSU’s official representative to California State University affinity groups and Joint Library committees.
- Overseeing the administration of budget allocations for user services and collections.

The Ideal Candidate

Education and Experience
- A master’s degree in Library and Information Science (ALA accredited) or equivalent
- Minimum of five years demonstrated administrative experience with progressively greater authority in an academic library environment, including budget management, strategic planning, operations management and supervision of both managers and employees in a collective bargaining environment
- Experience working in a diverse and team-based organization, and awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a diverse population
- Commitment to the partnership with the Public Library and collaborative decision making
- Experience managing public service
- Experience managing collections including electronic resources
- Knowledge of emerging trends in technology and scholarly resource management
- Experience leading organizational change and influencing organizational culture
- Record of scholarly, professional, or creative achievement including presentations at professional conferences and community organizations
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated flexibility, and the ability to lead change and influence organizational culture
- Excellent administrative skills

- Knowledge and ability to move the Digital Library Initiative to fruition
- Commitment to and enthusiasm for the public/university library merger
