The California Judicial Center Library in San Francisco has job openings for one full-time and one part-time (20 hours/week) temporary Assistant Law Librarian I positions. These temporary positions are funded through December 31, 2011. Although funding may be extended beyond December 2011, continued employment in these positions is contingent upon renewed funding.
THE CALIFORNIA JUDICIAL CENTER LIBRARY
The California Judicial Center Library serves the legal information needs of the justices and staff of the California Supreme Court and the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District; and the staff of the Administrative Office of the Courts. The Library’s collection of more than 250,000 volumes is located in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles. The Assistant Law Librarians are assigned to the San Francisco location, a 45,000 square foot facility located in the Hiram Johnson State Building, 455 Golden Gate Avenue.
Under the direction of the Director, Library Services, the Assistant Law Librarians I perform a full range of professional law library duties associated with the delivery of legal information, including but not limited to: conducting legal research; responding to reference inquiries; providing instruction in the use of electronic and other published resources; conducting library tours and orientations; developing bibliographies and pathfinders; and designing/updating Web-based information resources for the library’s homepage.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Using library and online resources to conduct legal research in all areas of interest to appellate courts;
• Preparing legislative histories;
• Responding to reference inquiries;
• Assisting justices, attorneys, externs and other staff members with their use of library and online resources;
• Providing instruction in the use of electronic and other published resources;
• Developing bibliographies and pathfinders;
• Conducting library tours and orientations;
• Transporting books and boxes of books weighing up to approximately 40 pounds; and
• Performing other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Equivalent to possession of a master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited institution, and two years of professional library experience
OR
Equivalent to possession of a law degree and one year of professional library experience.
Additional directly related experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
• Strong patron service orientation;
• Effective organizational and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work successfully as a team member.
• Experienced in the use of Lexis-Nexis, Westlaw, Dialog and the Internet/World Wide Web;
• Experienced in the use of MS Word, Access, Excel or other word processing and database programs;
• Experienced in searching OCLC and RLIN; and
• Experience with integrated online library systems.

From July 1, 2009 through June, 30, 2010, judicial branch employees are required to participate in the one day per month Mandatory Furlough Program. Whether the Mandatory Furlough Program will continue beyond June 30, 2010 will be addressed after enactment of the fiscal year 2010-2011 budget.

$5,177 – $6,296 per month, full-time
$2,588 – $3,148 per month, part-time
