The UCSF Library and Center for Knowledge Management is seeking a service-oriented, dynamic individual for the position of Metadata & Cataloging Librarian. As a member of the Collection Management Unit, the Metadata & Cataloging Librarian provides leadership, expertise, and guidance in cataloging services and metadata creation and implementation.

The California Digital Library licenses the majority of UCSF’s e-resources and provides catalog records and a link server to help manage the resources.
Responsibilities
The Metadata and Cataloging Librarian reports to the Head of Collection Management and supervises one cataloging position. This is a newly created position within the unit responsible for collection development and technical services. The Metadata & Cataloging Librarian provides expertise, guidance, and leadership in metadata applications and standards and assists with metadata implementation within the Library. The incumbent directs the workflow of cataloging processes and serves as a resource and liaison for cataloging practices and standards both within UCSF and throughout the wider UC Libraries network.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop procedures and documentation for metadata creation & tracking.
- Collaborate with other library units on digital projects such as electronic dissertations and digitization of collections.
- Perform original cataloging for monographs and serials in all formats.
- Guide cataloging procedures used within the unit.
- Guide the process for handling record data loads for CDL e-resources.
- Use knowledge of current issues and trends in bibliographic control to improve bibliographic access via the Library’s catalog.
- Contribute toward ILS record enhancement projects to standardize the Library’s records.
- Provide ongoing analysis of digital objects and their metadata and planning for metadata migration and enhancement.
- Maintain knowledge of and familiarity with new developments through professional activity in the field.
- Bring new cataloging and metadata initiatives to the library.
- Serve on internal and UC-wide library committees related to cataloging, metadata, and digitization initiatives.
Qualifications
- Masters degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
- Experience with cataloging using AACR, MARC, national cataloging standards, and Library of Congress classification and subject headings.
- Experience with integrated library systems.
- Understanding of metadata schemes such as Dublin Core, EAD, DACS, METS, MODS, and PREMIS.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to multi-task, problem-solve, and manage projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with XML.
- Experience with one or more of these schemes: Dublin Core, EAD, DACS, METS, MODS, or PREMIS.
- Experience using the Innovative Interfaces ILS and OCLC Connexion.
- Experience cataloging and classifying health sciences resources.
- Knowledge of National Library of Medicine Classification.
- Experience with project management.

Administrative Information
The Metadata Cataloger is an academic position in the Librarian series. Retention and promotion are based on four criteria: 1) professional competence and quality of service within the position, 2) professional activity outside the Library, 3) University and public service, and 4) research and other creative activity, including teaching and publication.
Appointment is in the Librarian Series, in the Associate Librarian or Librarian rank (annual salary range is $46,164 - $83,524, depending on qualifications and experience).
