Digital Librarian

The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) located in Monterey, California supports the U.S. Navy, other U. S. military branches, and foreign military services with postgraduate education. The NPS Library faces challenges such as creation and implementation of a digital institutional repository to support archival storage and access to the breadth of digital content unique to the School. There is a growing need for tools to mange, store and provide access to digitized institutional resources unique to NPS. The library is positioned with the skills and knowledge necessary to direct, organize, and develop integrated tools and to manage the creation of an information architecture along with customized and appropriate institutional taxonomies necessary to insure organization and retrieval of digitized content by all NPS constituencies.

DCS is a federal government contractor that provides products and personnel to different military academies including NPS and we specialize in teaching, training and IT services. We are seeing an individual that will help plan and build a digital repository that will contain institutional digital resources including: documents, streaming video, lectures, journal articles and reports, and departmental content. It will also serve as an archive of institutional resources such as accreditation documentation, catalogs, annual reports, course resources and syllabi, cultural artifacts, special collection materials, photographs, and other key memorabilia documenting events and history of the Naval Postgraduate School. We are looking for an individual for a minimum one year contract assignment that will work at NPS and supply the following:

Responsibilities:
• Develop project plan and phased implementation of a digital institutional repository
• Development of the architecture, standards, policies and procedures necessary to implement an institutional repository containing original NPS content
• Develop methodologies to promote NPS administration, faculty, library and ITACS participation
• Define and structure institutional taxonomies necessary to insure organization and retrieval of digitized content by authorized users
• Develop internal standards and guidelines for managing and enhancing metadata
• Collaborate with library staff to develop outreach strategies and processes necessary for building collaborative environments
• Prepare instructional materials and provide training to support and promote this initiative Provide expertise based on external developments impacting scholarly communications, academic institutional repositories and archives on local, national and international levels
• Provide expertise necessary to support implementation of scholarly publishing of NPS content
• Provide documentation necessary to support policies, procedures, guidelines, standards and interfaces necessary to manage the institutional repository

Skills and Qualifications:
• Degree in related Library Science
• Project management experience
• Professional Librarian background
• Background in digital repositories
• Knowledge of digital library initiatives, digital repositories, and development of controlled vocabularies/taxonomies
• Knowledge of metadata standards
• Knowledge of Open Source tools such as D-Space as related to digital repositories
• Experience creating information architectures
