The UCLA Library seeks applications/nominations for the position of Associate Director, National Network of Libraries of Medicine – Pacific Southwest Region (NN/LM PSR).
The National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Pacific Southwest Region (NN/LM PSR) program is funded through a contract with the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and functions administratively as a division of the Louise M. Darling Biomedical Library. The National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) program is coordinated by NLM and carried out through a nationwide network of health science libraries and information centers. The mission of the NN/LM is to advance the progress of medicine and improve the public health by: 1) providing all U.S. health professionals with equal access to biomedical information; and 2) improving the public’s access to information to enable them to make informed decisions about their health. The NN/LM Pacific Southwest Region includes Arizona, California, Hawaii, Nevada, and the U.S.-Associated Pacific Basin.
The NN/LM PSR staff facilitates resource sharing and cooperative projects among a network of over 600 health sciences libraries and resource centers, including academic medical libraries, hospital libraries, pharmaceutical and other special health sciences libraries; a growing number of public libraries with consumer health collections; and collections of community-based organizations that provide health information. They provide outreach programs, often in partnership with network libraries and other organizations in the region, to assist health professionals who have no direct affiliation with a health sciences library and consumers who are seeking sources of reliable health information. PSRML outreach activities include exhibits at conferences, classes in health information access, referrals to network libraries, and demonstrations of NLM databases and resources, including PubMed/MEDLINE and MedlinePlus.
Position Duties
Under the general direction of the Director, Biomedical Library, who is Director of the Regional Medical Library, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:
1. Serve as operating head with broad management responsibilities for the RML program.
2. Provide leadership in assessing information needs, planning network services and evaluating programs.
3. Through presentations, meetings and written communications, maintain liaison with the National Library of Medicine, the NN/LM PSR Regional Advisory Committee, Resource Library directors, regional library groups, state libraries, and health science librarians and health professionals throughout the region.
4. Oversee all NN/LM PSR services, including regional interlibrary loan and document delivery coordination, serials database maintenance, regional resource development, outreach activities for health professionals and consumers, cooperative projects, subcontracts with regional institutions, research projects, and publications and communications.
5. Prepare technical and business proposals and negotiate NN/LM PSR contracts with the National Library of Medicine.
6. Prepare annual budgets and program objectives, quarterly and annual narrative reports.
7. Work with the Director on policy matters and on coordinating NN/LM PSR activities with the work of other Biomedical Library divisions and with the campus library system.
8. Serve on the Biomedical Library’s Executive Committee, participating in long-range planning for the Biomedical Library.
9. Supervise 6.5 FTE.
Required Qualifications
1. ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science OR significant graduate-level coursework toward such a degree OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
2. Evidence of strong administrative abilities, including competence in planning and implementation of strategic goals, priorities, and new initiatives.
3. Effective organizational, decision-making, writing and oral presentation skills.
4. Experience managing personnel and finances, and mobilizing people for group action.
5. Excellent interpersonal, listening, consensus building, problem solving, and group dynamic skills.
6. Ability to work effectively with colleagues, health professionals and consumers in a diverse, multi-cultural community.
7. Knowledge of application of information technology to the delivery of health information resources and of issues and trends in health education, research, and practices, as well as in health sciences librarianship.
8. Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications.
9. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.
10. Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
11. Commitment to professional issues, demonstrated through strong interest in local or national committee work, research, publication, etc.
Desired Qualifications
1. Regional, extension or outreach experience in a health sciences library is desirable.

Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council – American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT).
