Public Services Librarian (part-time, temporary)

The Library’s mission is to help prepare knowledgeable, resourceful and responsible citizens for California and the global community by facilitating active exploration, discovery and synthesis of information. CSU Monterey Bay is a relatively young, growing campus, and the Library has a longstanding commitment to the use of technology-enhanced services and resources. As a teaching library, the Library faculty delivers and manages an active, outcomes-based instructional program. The Library’s curriculum-focused print/media collections and extensive electronic resources are augmented by a rapid, efficient Interlibrary Loan operation. The design of Tanimura and Antle Family Memorial Library, which opened in December 2008, co-locates library services with campus programs that support student learning, including writing, peer-tutoring, and undergraduate research. At this stage in the university’s growth, seven librarian faculty and seven staff share responsibility for the Library’s array of services in a highly collaborative environment. Responsibilities:
The Public Services Librarian position requires a forward-looking, pragmatic, motivated individual who is able to communicate effectively and positively with students, faculty, and library colleagues. The Librarian will provide reference and research assistance to CSUMB students, faculty, and staff both virtually and in person at the reference desk. In the reference desk setting, the Librarian will instruct and assist users in developing research strategies and searching electronic and print resources. Preparing and revising print and online resources that support reference services may also be assigned. The selected candidate will also be responsible for building services for a portion of each weekend. Qualified candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes variable weekday evening shifts and full weekend shift(s).
This part-time, temporary appointment is under the direction of the Library Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
* M.L.S. or equivalent degree from ALA-accredited institution
* Experience providing reference service in an academic library, including virtual reference service
* Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communication
* Sensitivity to and demonstrated interest in forwarding CSUMB’s academic goals, as identified in the University Vision Statement (http://csumb.edu/vision)
* Demonstrated success in collaborative library or academic settings
Desirable Qualifications:
* Exhibit exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, enjoy teaching and reference work, adaptable in fast-changing environments and willing to take risks, consider and introduce new and untested approaches and use creative problem-solving skills.
* Experience in teaching research concepts and critical thinking skills at the reference desk and in a classroom or group training setting. Knowledge of current and emerging trends in outcomes-based learning in higher education.

The anticipated part-time salary is based on the CSU Assistant Librarian pay scale (http://www.calstate.edu/hrpims/salary/SalarySchd20100602.pdf) and is commensurate with experience.
