Job Summary
The Caltech Library seeks a technically adept, forward thinking, verasatile science oriented information professional who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the changing nature of library services and technologies. The successful, scientifically trained professional will provide leadership and strategic vision for library information and research services within the Caltech community and will approach library-based information services and projects in an entrepreneurial yet practical manner using creativity and critical thinking to blend traditional academic library practices with innovation to strengthen the Institute’s scholarship and learning programs.

This position is a key member of the Library’s administrative team providing leadership ensuring organizational effectiveness, efficiency and sharing in responsibilities for decision-making, resource management, and development of policies for library operations and services. This position reports to the University Librarian and leads and directs the work of the Caltech subject specialist/liaison librarians to develop and maintain instructional, liaison, subject collection and information specialist responsibilities. This position advocates for that group at the administrative level while also promoting an atmosphere of innovation, collaboration, participation, and a shared value of deliberatively pursuing transformative possibilities. The mission of the Library System is to provide scholarly resources and advanced information services in an adaptable environment that meets the changing needs of Caltech’s research and education programs in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Job Duties
I. The associated activities are:
A. Serves as science subject-matter expert and leads, motivates, and directs unit for instructional, information and research services including initiating changes and new directions (e.g. Institutional repository, eScience, and data curation) to realize strategic goals of the Library.
1. Oversees instructional, general and in-depth reference and research services, and consultation in Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering, and Math.
2. Takes a system-wide perspective to collaborate with other units and staff to ensure optimal information service at all levels of the library’s operations.
3. Leads and develops both librarians and staff through mentorship and training.
4. Develop and implement assessment programs regarding the information and research services for faculty, researchers, and students.

B. Directs, coordinates, and also participates in the departmental liaison and outreach program;
1. Establishes and maintains on-going contact with Caltech faculty, researchers and departmental library user-groups.

C. Leads, develops, directs, coordinates and advocates the evaluation, selection, deployment, presentation and promotion of subject and content based information and research services in the Caltech Library.
1. Stays abreast of the changing scholarly publishing environment and consults with library staff and faculty regarding needs.
2. Oversees promotion of online resources via the Library’s web or other vehicle; organizes usability studies as needed for successful design and presentation.
3. In collaboration with the e-Resources Librarian and Head of Access and Fulfillment Services strategizes for cost-effective use of resources.
4. Leads and directs subject librarians regarding opportunities with new business models and technologies for delivering needed/desired information effectively.

D. Serves as a member of the senior management group of the Caltech Library.
1. Participates in departmental strategic planning and evaluation of the library’s research services.
2. Participates in library-wide planning, policy-making, goal-setting and assessment efforts.

E. Recruits and manages subject specialist librarians including planning, organizing and assigning and evaluating the work of direct reports.
F. Participates in professional information, management and library science organizations’ activities in order to keep abreast of developments in these fields.
G. Performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
1. Master’s degree in a pertinent accredited program.
2. Demonstrated 5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility in academic or research environment including supervision and management.
3. Bachelors degree or equivalent in a scientific or technical field.
4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication.
5. Commitment to user-oriented service.
6. Evidence of professional activity and contributions.
7. Working familiarity in library terminology:
a. MARC, DC
b. Integrated Library Systems
c. OCLC
d. Open URL and resolver technologies

Preferred Qualifications
1. PhD in a scientific or technical field
2. Master’s in Library Science from an accredited program.
3. Ability to communicate, collaborate, and problem solve across units with staff and managers in other units of a flat organization structure.
4. Knowledge of evolving standards and technologies underpinning library transformation.

The University of California at Berkeley invites applications for the position of Librarian for the Japanese Collection at the C. V. Starr East Asian Library. The Starr Library houses the largest collection of research materials in the Japanese language at any university outside Asia. Its comprehensive Japanese collection contains more than 385,000 volumes and nearly 2,000 current Japanese serial titles, as well as electronic databases and non-print materials in Japanese. The C. V. Starr East Asian Library serves the campus community and a substantial number of off-campus users.

This position reports to the Director of the C. V. Starr East Asian Library.

Responsibilities: The incumbent will evaluate and select Japanese language materials in all subject areas, formats, and media, including electronic; manage acquisitions funds, prepare requests for funds, and expend funds. When necessary or advantageous, the incumbent will coordinate acquisitions with Stanford University or other UC campus libraries, either through existing agreements or by exploring additional areas of cooperation. He or she will select materials for storage or withdrawal, preservation, microfilming, or digitization. The incumbent will review and redefine collection policy to meet the teaching and research needs of faculty and students, and attempt to anticipate subject areas and types of research materials that should be collected. The incumbent will work with the Director to identify and initiate applications for grant funds to improve access to, or conservation of, the Japanese collection.

In addition to collection management, the incumbent will provide reference and consultation services for scholars and students in Japanese studies. He or she will respond to individual queries and conduct bibliographic instruction as requested, serving as library liaison for faculty and students. The incumbent will work with the East Asian Library’s Technical Services unit to create and maintain name authority files for items in the Japanese collection.

The incumbent may supervise a bibliographical assistant and represent the Library in regional, national, and international cooperative programs and special projects concerning Japanese collections and materials.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Qualifications:
Required:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent degree
  • Expert knowledge of spoken and written Japanese (modern and classical)
  • Knowledge of Japanese scholarship, publishing, government documents, and the book trade
  • Subject background and training in Japanese history, literature, or an appropriate discipline related to Japanese studies
  • Current knowledge of Japan’s e-publishing industry and online resources suitable to an academic context
  • Familiarity with various systems for romanizing Japanese, especially the Hepburn system
  • Excellent oral and written skills in English
  • Ability to work well with staff of diverse backgrounds
  • Strong commitment to excellence in service and a demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a complex, changing environment

Preferred:

  • Advanced academic degree in Japanese history, literature, or a related field
  • Previous work experience in a research library, preferably with East Asian language materials

This is a 50%-time career-track appointment available starting July 1, 2012.

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking an Accessioning and Processing Archivist whose primary responsibility will be to accession and appraise manuscripts collections. This is a part-time (.5 FTE), career-track appointment. The successful candidate will have experience in manuscript collection appraisal and accessioning, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, work experience with project management, familiarity with archival standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

The Accessioning and Processing Archivist has full responsibility for managing the intake of manuscript collections and supervising processing support staff consisting of student assistants, and volunteers. The Archivist establishes workflow and work schedules, and creates mechanisms for reduction of collection backlogs. He/she assists with the packing and shipment of collections using a rental van or moving company from donor sites. Trains unit staff and edits/reviews unit staff work-product, especially the creation of collection records in OCLC and the local collection management system. He/she plans the goals for collection intake and develops accessioning plans for collections in coordination with manuscript unit staff and curators. The Archivist works closely with curators in the assessment of collections and in selection of collection materials. He/she is also responsible for the administration of new acquisitions and works with the Digital Collections Unit to develop and maintian tracking tools.

Qualifications

Required:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent degree.
  • Knowledge and experience in appraisal and accessioning of archival collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with processing, arrangement and description of personal papers, organizational records, and other special collections through completed finding aids.
  • Knowledge of DACS, MARC, and EAD.
  • Evidence of effective project planning, management, and completion.
  • Evidence of interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and flexibility.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and ensure regular workflows.
  • Ability to meet a high standard of quality of work independently and expeditiously.
  • Ability to coordinate, schedule, and handle heavy workloads.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to safely move carts and book/flatbed trucks loaded up to 100 pounds; lift and bend with boxes or volumes weighing up to 40 pounds; carry large/awkward map carriers; climb and reach on step stools and rolling ladders; handle dollies and metal trucks.
  • Valid California drivers license.

Preferred:

  • Undergraduate degree in history (especially US or Western US history).
  • Reading knowledge of Spanish.
  • Experience using digital content management systems and electronic collection management systems.
