Job Summary

The Caltech Library seeks a technically adept, forward thinking, versatile science oriented information professional who is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the changing nature of library services and technologies. The successful, scientifically trained professional will provide leadership and strategic vision for library information and research services within the Caltech community and will approach library-based information services and projects in an entrepreneurial yet practical manner using creativity and critical thinking to blend traditional academic library practices with innovation to strengthen the Institute’s scholarship and learning programs.
This position is a key member of the Library’s administrative team providing leadership ensuring organizational effectiveness, efficiency and sharing in responsibilities for decision-making, resource management, and development of policies for library operations and services. This position reports to the University Librarian and leads and directs the work of the Caltech subject specialist/liaison librarians to develop and maintain instructional, liaison, subject collection and information specialist responsibilities. This position advocates for that group at the administrative level while also promoting an atmosphere of innovation, collaboration, participation, and a shared value of deliberatively pursuing transformative possibilities. The mission of the Library System is to provide scholarly resources and advanced information services in an adaptable environment that meets the changing needs of Caltech’s research and education programs in a timely and cost-effective manner.
Job Duties

I. The associated activities are:
 A. Serves as science subject-matter expert and leads, motivates, and directs unit for instructional, information and research services including initiating changes and new directions (e.g. Institutional repository, eScience, and data curation) to realize strategic goals of the Library. 
1. Oversees instructional, general and in-depth reference and research services, and consultation in Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences, Engineering, and Math.
 2. Takes a system-wide perspective to collaborate with other units and staff to ensure optimal information service at all levels of the library’s operations.
 3. Leads and develops both librarians and staff through mentorship and training. 4. Develop and implement assessment programs regarding the information and research services for faculty, researchers, and students.
B. Directs, coordinates, and also participates in the departmental liaison and outreach program; 
1. Establishes and maintains on-going contact with Caltech faculty, researchers and departmental library user-groups.
C. Leads, develops, directs, coordinates and advocates the evaluation, selection, deployment, presentation and promotion of subject and content based information and research services in the Caltech Library. 
1. Stays abreast of the changing scholarly publishing environment and consults with library staff and faculty regarding needs.
 2. Oversees promotion of online resources via the Library’s web or other vehicle; organizes usability studies as needed for successful design and presentation.
3. In collaboration with the e-Resources Librarian and Head of Access and Fulfillment Services strategizes for cost-effective use of resources.
 4. Leads and directs subject librarians regarding opportunities with new business models and technologies for delivering needed/desired information effectively.
D. Serves as a member of the senior management group of the Caltech Library. 
1. Participates in departmental strategic planning and evaluation of the library’s research services. 
2. Participates in library-wide planning, policy-making, goal-setting and assessment efforts.
E. Recruits and manages subject specialist librarians including planning, organizing and assigning and evaluating the work of direct reports. 
F. Participates in professional information, management and library science organizations’ activities in order to keep abreast of developments in these fields. 
G. Performs other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in a pertinent accredited program.
 2. Demonstrated 5 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility in academic or research environment including supervision and management.
3. Bachelors degree or equivalent in a scientific or technical field.
 4. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication.
 5. Commitment to user-oriented service. 
6. Evidence of professional activity and contributions. 
7. Working familiarity in library terminology:
 a. MARC, DC
b. Integrated Library Systems
c. OCLC
d. Open URL and resolver technologies
Preferred Qualifications
 1. PhD in a scientific or technical field
 2. Master’s in Library Science from an accredited program.
 3. Ability to communicate, collaborate, and problem solve across units with staff and managers in other units of a flat organization structure.
 4. Knowledge of evolving standards and technologies underpinning library transformation.

 7. Instruction experience.
 8. Successful grant-writing experience.
 9. Demonstrated ability to speak publicly.
