Dean, Library and Information Resources
The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is currently accepting applications for the position of Dean, Library and Information Resources.
Established in 1961 by Walt and Roy Disney, CalArts is a private, non-profit, arts college offering graduate and undergraduate degrees in six schools (Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater) to approximately 1,500 students. The institute is known for its faculty of distinguished artists and scholars, outstanding students, and multidisciplinary approach to arts education. CalArts is also proud of its exceptionally diverse population that is 45% domestic students of color and 20% international.
The CalArts Library enables student and faculty artist/scholars to develop the skills necessary for creative exploration, critical reflection and lifelong learning, in an environment that supports and promotes the diversity of voices that encompass the CalArts community. The library offers a full suite of academic reference and instruction services, and contains a collection of over 200,000 physical items in all formats and approximately 300,000 electronic resources, that include a unique archival and rare-book collection, and a distinctive moving image collection.
Under the direction of the Provost, the dean will lead, plan, organize and direct the operations and activities of the library; provide innovative information resources and services in support of the institute’s mission and vision; project and monitor budgets; work collaboratively with faculty, administration, staff and students in a service-oriented environment; and coordinate the work, supervise and evaluate the performance of library faculty and staff.
Qualifications of the dean will include a Master’s Degree in Library Science, a minimum of ten years of increasingly-responsible experience in an academic library environment, including five years in a supervisory capacity; currency with best practices within information technology including emerging technologies related to Library systems and services; experience with coordinating efforts to plan, develop and implement technology that support digital scholarship; demonstrated skills in budget planning, analysis and control of funding from multiple sources; experience with fundraising in a library setting; and appreciation of the visual and performing arts.
