$70,371-$84,930 per annum, based upon qualifications
This is a full-time appointment available starting May 2017.

The University of California, Berkeley seeks a creative, collaborative, and self-motivated individual for a newly created Assessment Program Librarian position. Working with library, campus, and UC System colleagues, this person will play a key role to leading, designing, developing and sustaining a holistic library-wide assessment program to inform the UC Berkeley Library’s decisions about collections and services focused on user needs.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources, the Assessment Program Librarian will (including but not limited to):

  • Create and develop an innovative, collaborative, evidence-based and effective assessment program that supports and enables the Library’s strategic initiatives and develop evidence-driven approaches to achieving strategic objectives. (http://stories.lib.berkeley.edu/strategicplan/)
  • Oversee library-wide assessment efforts to monitor, plan, and improve UC Berkeley Library’s services and scholarly resources.
  • Establish, through discussions with a broad constituency of librarians and library staff, effective measures of collections and service to use in planning and decision- making.
  • Coordinate external reporting efforts, lead user experience efforts, and generate assessment and benchmarking reports for the Library Leadership Team.
  • Gather, analyze and report data gathered from various sources including library systems, vendor statistics, observations, surveys, web analytics, interviews, focus groups and other qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Oversee, manage and coordinate cyclical assessment statistical survey activities such as ARL, ACRL and UCOP including: gathering; reviewing, validating and evaluating; and synthesizing data submitted by library and affiliated libraries units.
  • Collaborate with external assessment groups among campus partners such as Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Information Services and Technology (IST), Educational Technology Services (ETS) and the California Digital Library (CDL).
  • Investigate, communicate, promote and establish best practices to leverage library assessment methods, tools, and protocols for data collection, analysis, and documentation, and contribute to ongoing efforts to validate and improve assessment best practices.
  • Identify and implement strategies for cultivating a culture of assessment including providing consultation and guidance to support library staff and units as they gather, process, analyze, manage, and report data related to library resources and services.
  • Serve on committees, councils and project teams to contribute expertise to research and evaluation methodologies.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment; the successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

Minimum Basic Qualification(s) at Time of Application:

  • American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent degree

Additional Required Qualifications by Start Date of Position:

  • At least three years of professional academic or research library experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data
    analysis methodologies, program evaluation, research design, instrument design, data visualization tools in an academic library environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, analyze, and report data.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct assessment projects designing or administering surveys, and provide recommendations that seek to measure the library’s impact on teaching, learning and research.
  • Demonstrated ability to present complex information to audiences who possess different levels of library knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse staff and campus user communities.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in persuasive written and oral communication skills.
  • Evidence of leadership skills, initiative, flexibility and the ability to adapt to a complex, rapidly changing academic environment.
  • Demonstrated project planning experience and ability to advance multiple
    complex projects in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to function independently, take initiative, and set goals and priorities in a dynamic environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Additional college coursework or degree in areas related to evaluation or statistics.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience including opportunities and fostering and building capacity in others, including
  • Experience with Institutional Review Board (IRB) training and ethical use of data.
  • Experience in designing, conducting usability testing, surveys, and facilitating focus groups.
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of managing data long term.
  • Experience with and knowledge of quantitative and qualitative statistical software,
    instruments and techniques (e.g. SPSS, Nvivo, ATLAS.ti and Tableau)
  • Experience with survey tools (e.g. LibQUAL+®, ClimateQUAL, IPEDS and MINES) and standards-compliant applications that manage collection usage data (SUSHI and COUNTER)
  • Knowledge of academic library operations, services, key issues, and trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop instructional materials and conduct assessment-focused workshops for library staff.
