The University of California, Riverside Library seeks nominations and applications for a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, and adaptable administrator to fill the position of Assistant/ Associate University Librarian (AUL) for the Digital Library.
Located an hour’s drive to the east of Los Angeles, an hour west of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, an hour east of ocean beaches, ninety minutes north of San Diego, and an hour south of mountain ski resorts, UCR is located in an area of dramatic landscapes and rich cultural traditions. The UCR Library is a critical partner in preparing UCR’s students to be globally competitive while simultaneously preparing them for careers in the Inland Empire and beyond. The mission of the UCR Library is no less than to bring the world’s information resources to the UCR community and to ensure that UCR students, faculty, and staff have the skills to fully exploit those resources to change the world for the better.
The UCR Library is a team of intensely collaborative, forward-thinking colleagues dedicated to providing excellent services to our students, faculty, and community members in a rapidly evolving information environment. The successful candidate will be technologically sophisticated; committed to problem-solving in local, regional, national, and international arenas; and able to develop innovative solutions to complex problems; and a dynamic and effective leader.
Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL for the Digital Library will be a member of the Librarian’s Cabinet consisting of the University Librarian, the Deputy University Librarian, the AUL for Content and Discovery, the Director of Planning and Budget, and the Director of Organizational Design and Human Resources. The Librarian’s Cabinet jointly assumes responsibility for collaborative leadership, management, and decision-making of the UCR Library. The AULs play an active role in defining and implementing the strategic goals for advancing library programs and services in support of the university’s rapidly evolving research, education, and public service mission and routinely meet to generate strategic plans, develop solutions, and develop proposals to move the Library forward. In addition to being a member of the Librarian’s Cabinet, the AUL for the Digital Library is expected to be an active participant in the AUL Team meetings in which the AULs address tactical issues intersecting their respective areas of responsibility.
The UCR Library is comprised of three facilities housing more than 3,800,000 volumes, 940,000 electronic books, 97,000 print and electronic journals, and 2,300,000 microforms. The Library provides services to more than 22,000 students and nearly 2,000 faculty and other academics in an institutional environment planning for and experiencing extensive growth. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic staff of 131 FTE librarians, support personnel (including student FTE) in building a research library of excellence within a dynamic and diverse university ranked among the top 50 in the nation. The UCR Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Among the unique collections of the UCR Library is the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction and Fantasy, the Water Resources Collections & Archives, the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, the Paul Chou Collection of Chinese history and culture, the George Brown Papers, the Tomás Rivera Papers, a constituent part of the Tomás Rivera Archives Project, and the Inland Empire Memories Initiative. The UCR Library is an integral part of the University of California library system. With collections totaling 30 million volumes, UC’s more than 100 libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. In addition, UC’s California Digital Library (CDL) provides the core of the Universitys digital collections. CDL also assists UC to share resources and holdings more effectively and provides leadership in applying technology to the development of library collections and services. Organizationally situated within the UC Office of the President, the CDL operates in close collaboration with all UC campuses and their libraries.
Responsibilities: Under the general direction of the University Librarian, the AUL for the Digital Library provides vision, leadership, and management for all aspects of the Libraries’ digital library which includes Cyberinfrastructure/Library Information Technology Solutions, Digital Library Initiatives and Digitization Services.
- Provide vision, strategic direction, leadership, and management for the Digital Library, which includes Cyberinfrastructure/Library Information Technology Solutions, Digital Library Initiatives, and Digitization Services;
- Provide strategic leadership and management for the planning, design, implementation, and operation of technology services, systems, and infrastructure for the UCR Library, which includes but is not limited to the library online catalog and component parts; web and access systems, digitization lab software; and the core server, database, storage, backup and web infrastructure;
- Provide strategic leadership and management for advancing digital initiatives and information technology services through rapid identification, assessment, and adoption of new technologies and methodologies in support of the Library’s mission to support the teaching, learning, and research mission of the university;
- Collaboratively define goals and implement strategic plans for all aspects of library operations, services, programs, collections, and infrastructure, in support of the University’s rapidly evolving research, education, and public service mission;
- Provide leadership to division staff, including recruitment, hiring, training, staff development, promotion, mentoring, performance evaluation and management, and foster a motivated and engaged work environment;
- Serve as liaison to UCR’s schools, colleges, departments, and committees, and work collaboratively with campus leaders and administrators, to promote and advance the Library’s opportunities to partner with the academic communities at UCR and beyond, within the focus of divisional activities and responsibilities;
- Provide leadership, work collaboratively, and represent the UCR Library on various UC standing committees and ad hoc groups;
- Represent the UCR Library and provide leadership in local, regional, and national forums, and in system-wide planning for technology and in regional and national forums and organizations related to library information technology such as Digital Library Federation, Joint Conferences on Digital Libraries, Coalition of Networked Information, etc.;
- Maintain knowledge of and track university-wide IT initiatives and work collaboratively with campus administrators and faculty to promote and advance the Library’s technology role in the academic community, and to support faculty digital initiatives.
- Provide collaborative leadership in securing and managing grants, philanthropic support, and cost recovery mechanisms to further the efforts of the digital library
- In support of the Content and Discovery Division and the Teaching, Learning, and Research Division of the UCR Library as well as the larger research, teaching, and learning mission of the university, provide strategic leadership in developing and managing a flexible, reliable and innovative technology ecosystem that enables access to research collections and facilitates user-centered services, along with a robust computing and data storage infrastructure that supports the Library as both repository and research platform.
- Master’s degree in library and/or information science or equivalent.
- Minimum of five years of experience managing a department or significant program in an academic institution related to Data Services, Digital Library Programs and Library Technology Services, or other applicable experience.
- Significant experience in the management of information systems organizations and systems and ability to envision and set strategy for information systems in support of research, teaching and learning missions of the University.
- Progressively responsible management and supervisory experience in an academic library or in higher education.
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to engage others in collaborative planning and delivery of user-centered services.
- Excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Demonstrated experience with program development and collaboration.
- Technology skills and experience with its application in knowledge management and support of teaching and scholarship.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated judgment, broad perspective and emotional intelligence.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to work successfully in an intensely collaborative environment with a broad range of people from culturally diverse backgrounds including healthcare providers, colleagues, administrators, students, faculty, donors, and alumni.

Salary and benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience within a range of $94,200-$150,000. Appointment at Assistant or Associate University Librarian rank dependent upon qualifications. Excellent retirement system, health and vacation benefits.
