The Health Sciences Librarian serves as the subject liaison to the Nursing, Physical Therapy, Psychology, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences departments while also providing research assistance, information literacy instruction, and outreach to all members of the university community both in-person and online.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Designs and leads research skills instruction and health information literacy in a variety of formats, including classroom visits, online research guides and tutorials, individual research consultations and workshops to undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty.
- Provides research assistance to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the health, social and physical sciences.
- Assists the Associate Director of Research and Instruction with departmental learning outcomes assessment, online learning projects, and LMS integrations using Canvas.
- Participates in digital and print collection development.
- Commitment to fostering a diverse educational and professional environment and demonstration of the ability to work with a diverse population.
- Represents the library in university-wide activities and in other venues, participates in other related library activities to support the University Libraries’ mission and to serve the university community as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with, and support, librarians and staff at both campus libraries to ensure optimal service is given to all members of the MSMU community.
- Weekends and evenings may be required.
- Runs reports and create summaries for annual reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Director.
- Knowledge of learning pedagogies and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy; ALA Code of Ethics; using PubMed and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH); exposure to teaching and learning services, assessment, instructional technology, and collection development trends in academic libraries in higher education
Abilities and Skills:
- Familiarity with the health sciences or related subject areas (e.g. nursing, counseling, health services, etc.)
- Knowledge of current trends in academic librarianship related to research and instruction, such as knowledge of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and medical librarianship
- Experience creating engaging learning opportunities for students and faculty, or community audiences
- Proficiency in the use of technology and other emerging technologies and platforms for delivery of library services
- Strong desire to explore pedagogical approaches and learning theories that can enrich teaching practice
- Familiarity with assessment methods and techniques
- Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment and independently

- Ability to work creatively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and university community-at-large
- Demonstrated experience providing reference services in a health sciences library or higher education library setting

- ALA- accredited Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) required
- Experience in a health science library as a librarian or equivalent, preferably working with undergraduate and graduate students
- Experience with reference, instruction, LibGuides, and online tutorials preferred
- Knowledge of best practices and emerging trends in information literacy instruction, and health information resources
Work Location: Both Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles) and Doheny Campus (Downtown Los Angeles)
