The Library
We serve a total of more than 40,000 students as well as approximately 4,000 faculty and staff. Our website (http://www.library.fullerton.edu) is a vital component of the Library’s extensive instruction program and serves as a gateway to resources: including 1.3 million books, government documents, and audiovisual materials; over 50,000 periodicals available electronically or in print; and 200 electronic databases. The staff includes 23 FTE librarians, 35 FTE paraprofessionals, and 80 student assistants.

Position
California State University Fullerton (CSUF) Pollak Library is seeking a highly collaborative individual to serve as the Social Sciences and Government Documents Librarian. This position includes responsibilities in the Library’s Instruction and Information Services unit as well as the Collections and Scholarly Communications unit. The successful candidate will provide subject-specific as well as general library services, including instruction, reference, collection development, and outreach. In the area of government documents, the librarian will curate the Pollak Library’s Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) collection. As a designated selective Federal Depository Library, the Pollak Library is required to provide public access to its FDLP collection and support for locating and accessing these materials. Other collections included in Government Documents are the California depository collection, the local city/county/regional collection, and the international collection. This position—newly created in response to Pollak Library’s recent re-organization, self-assessment, and strategic plan—will have the opportunity to be creative and innovative in building a library for the 21st century.

Librarians at CSUF have faculty status and are expected to meet promotion and tenure requirements, including scholarly and professional activities, as well as serving on department, Library, and university committees.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Instruction and Information Services unit, the Social Sciences/Government Documents Librarian:

  • Serves as Library liaison and subject consultant to academic departments in the social sciences.
  • Participates in the Library’s extensive instruction program, including planning, teaching, and assessing faculty-requested library instruction sessions.
  • Provides reference and research assistance to the campus community in person and via virtual reference.
  • Works with the Collections and Scholarly Communications unit to identify and select materials in assigned subject areas.
  • Creates and maintains subject-related instructional materials and content for the Library website.

As a member of the Collections and Scholarly Communications unit, the Social Sciences/Government Documents Librarian:

  • Serves as the coordinator of the Pollak Library’s Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) collection, selecting and managing FDLP content that meets the needs of primary Library users and the general public.
  • Maintains a strong familiarity with the Documents collection, serving the public and assisting colleagues in the use of the collection.
  • Manages the FDLP documents selection profile, consistently moving toward a smaller selection of print materials.
  • Oversees the process of print government documents deselection, while confirming compliance with FDLP procedures and obligations.
  • Ensures all FDLP regulations for depository libraries are fulfilled and stays up-to-date with FDLP instructions and announcements, responding accordingly to requests from the FDLP.
  • Monitors development at the FDLP and in professional circles, including trends in the management and provision of Government Documents resources and related issues.
  • Identifies and follows up on opportunities to preserve at-risk print and born-digital documents produced by government offices.

Qualifications
Required

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent institution by the time of appointment.
  • Experience and/or potential in developing and teaching effective library instruction sessions.
  • Current reference experience, including the use of academic electronic resources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in public services and government information in academic libraries.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Government Documents, including knowledge of and experience with FDLP regulations, guidelines, and practices for Depository Libraries.
  • Knowledge of the Superintendent of Documents (SuDocs) classification system.
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems (e.g. Alma).
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and collegially on a team in a demanding and rapidly changing environment.
  • Well-developed analytical, organizational, and communications skills (oral, written, and interpersonal).
  • Evidence or interest in professional and scholarly activities.
  • Ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment with co-workers, library users, and the wider campus community.
  • Availability to work some weeknights and weekends.

Preferred

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a strong user-service orientation.
  • Bachelor’s degree or librarian specialty experience in one of the social sciences.
  • Experience or interest in creating and maintaining content for library websites.
  • More than three years professional experience working in Government Documents at a Government Depository Library.
  • Experience supervising the work of student assistants.

Rank & Salary
The position will be at the rank of Senior Assistant Librarian. Salary range will be from $67,656 to $72,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
