California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) seeks a visionary, dynamic and collaborative leader for the Division of Library and Information Resources. The Institute Librarian will lead the effort to build a shared vision, implement an innovative strategic direction, and provide operational and technology leadership for the Library that meets the Institute’s educational mission and vision. This faculty position reports to the Provost, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and is a member of the Deans Council.

Institute Librarian will provide leadership to:
- Create and articulate a clear shared vision for the role of the Library within the greater Institute.
- Collaboratively plan, develop, manage and assess the Library’s collections, operations, services and facilities.
- Provide and develop innovative information resources in a service oriented environment.
- Further develop the Library as a collaborative learning environment and learning commons.
- Develop and implement strategies and infrastructure to manage, preserve and provide access to digital assets that are under the Library’s stewardship.
- Plan, develop and manage budgets.
- Actively engage in fundraising, grant writing and other development activities to support the Library’s mission.
- Supervise and evaluate faculty librarians and staff.
- Advocate for and represent the Library within the Institute and in professional organizations.
- MLS, MLIS or MSIS from an ALA-accredited program.
- Several years of relevant administrative and supervisory experience in an academic or research library.
- Capacity to effectively lead faculty librarians and library staff with an evident collaborative and participatory management style that values equity and transparency in decision-making.
- Proven ability to inspire, build trust, collaborate, lead organizational change, foster innovation, and empower staff growth.
- Experience leading collaborative initiatives that advance an academic library’s role and mission in the evolving digital landscape while balancing physical collections and the sense of ‘library as place’.
- Knowledge of and expertise with best practices for integrating emerging technologies that support Library systems and services.
- Experience developing infrastructure to sustainably manage digital assets and collections.
- In depth knowledge of current publishing practices in the arts, with particular attention to digital scholarship.
- Leadership experience and the ability to engage faculty librarians and library staff to collaboratively plan and deliver innovative user-centered services.
- Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to collaboratively define, plan, develop and implement new initiatives for research, teaching, and learning as it relates to artistic practice.
- Ability to collect, synthesize and analyze quantitative and qualitative data and to communicate results to a wide variety of assessment partners.
- Proven experience and skill with budget planning, analysis, and management.
- Demonstrated success in seeking new sources of library funding, fundraising and/or grant writing.
- Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with the commitment to fostering a culturally responsive environment.
- Demonstrated success in creating structures that cultivate welcoming, inclusive, and diverse library and learning environments.
- Awareness of emerging trends in libraries and higher education.
- Experience with planning and managing renovations of a library, or a significant unit within a library, or planning for a new library space.
- Demonstrated experience writing institutional policy and messaging that articulates the library’s value to a wide variety of audiences.
- Knowledge and appreciation of the visual and performing arts.
- Evidence of successful grant proposals.
- Record of scholarly contributions and professional service.
