Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Distinctive Collections and Chief Policy Strategist, the Director of Library Special Collections (DLSC) provides leadership, oversight, and strategic vision to shape the future of special collections and archives at UCLA. A member of the Library’s management team, the incumbent heads an enterprise-wide organization marshalling the Library’s special collections resources, services, and operations around its mission to create a distinctive learning environment for the UCLA community and society at large. The DLSC leads Library Special Collections (LSC) to inspire discovery, cultivate knowledge, advance research, preserve cultural heritage and actively develop and lead initiatives that advance diversity as integral to academic excellence and inclusion as integral to modern library special collections. The DLSC plans, organizes, and manages all aspects of Library Special Collections (LSC) operations and budget. Fostering a flexible, work environment, and a strong team spirit, the incumbent establishes and actively supports creative initiatives and facilitates new partnerships and interdisciplinary projects. The DLSC collaborates with all departments and units throughout the Library and across the campus. The DLSC works across the UCLA Libraries to develop fundraising strategies, stewards and cultivates donors, and writes grant proposals to support the goals and activities of the department and Library alongside the following stakeholders and units: Associate University Librarian for Distinctive Collections and Chief Policy Strategist, senior management team, the Executive director of Library Development, and the Distinctive Collection Portfolio Teams.
The Distinctive Collections portfolio encompasses three formerly independent units: the Richard C. Rudolph East Asian Library (EAL), International Studies, and Library Special Collections. EAL and International studies serve five Title VI Centers on campus. All three share the Library’s broader collecting mission to create, build, steward, curate, promote, and preserve the evidence of history and the diverse cultural record to enable and support teaching, research, and new discoveries. The UCLA Library, one of the top academic libraries in North America merged these units as a result of strategic planning and a recognition of the opportunities for UCLA as a large public research university to lead and address the diverse strategic special needs involved in collecting, teaching, connecting users, and in expanding making broadly accessible materials and services in these areas.
