Librarian – Manager of Reference Services, California Lutheran University, Thousand Oaks, CA

Basic Function

Under the coordination of the Assistant Director of Library Operations, Manager of Reference Services leads reference services (including print reference collection, virtual reference tools, and online reference resources) for the Pearson Library and manages the Research & Information Desk. The incumbent maintains and evaluates reference statistics using analytics tool and coordinates the librarians and student assistants’ reference duties.

Representative Duties

  • ​Provides expert research assistance to students, faculty, and staff with a focus on access, evaluation of resources, and information literacy using library tools including online catalog, web tools, databases, virtual reference tools, etc. E
  • ​Assesses patrons’ information literacy skills as part of the reference interview and provides instruction as appropriate to ensure patron success in research. E
  • ​Manages virtual reference tools including LibAnswers and LibChat, update and maintain library website using OU Campus, manage and edit reference resources online using LibGuides. E
  • ​Maintains and evaluates reference statistics using Springshare analytics tools; presents relevant statistics as necessary. E
  • ​Directs the development and maintenance for the print and online reference collection. Coordinates and directs reference weeding and necessary updating of the Reference Collection within all subject areas. E
  • ​Coordinates librarians’ reference duties. E
  • ​Coordinates with Public Services team to train and manage student assistants using a combination of live workshops, special training days, online training on Blackboard, paper handouts. E
  • ​Conducts student assistant’s performance/feedback surveys at the end of each term in collaboration with the Public Services Coordinator. E
  • ​Serves as subject specialist in assigned subject areas to support research needs of University faculty and staff. Provides collection development for these subjects; delivers information literacy sessions and outreach; assists with program reviews for respective departments. E
  • ​Participates in the planning, development and implementation of library programs and events. E
  • ​Provides backup for other librarians and support staff as needed to ensure library services run efficiently. E
  • ​Maintains cross training in circulation, interlibrary loan, information literacy, and collection development practices. E
  • ​Responsible for ongoing professional development in best practices for reference services and information technology to ensure understanding of essential tools and library services. E
