The University of California, Berkeley seeks a collaborative and user-centered librarian to join a team committed to teaching emerging scholars to approach research with confidence, creativity, and critical insight, empowering them to access, critically evaluate, and use information to create and distribute their own research in a technologically evolving environment. This position focuses on designing user-centered spaces and services to meet the needs of Berkeley’s undergraduate learning communities.
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation’s premier public universities. The Instruction Services Division (ISD) is a team of librarians and professional staff who provide leadership for all issues related to the Library’s educational role such as student learning, information literacy, first-year and transfer student experience, reference and research services, assessment of teaching and learning, instructor development, and the design of physical and virtual learning environments. We support course-integrated instruction, drop-in workshops, online guides, and individual research. Our work furthers the Library’s involvement in curricular initiatives and emphasizes the opportunities associated with undergraduate education. We cultivate liaison relationships with campus partners and academic programs. The Center for Connected Learning (CCL), currently in the design phase, is a hub for undergraduates to engage in multidisciplinary, multimodal inquiry and creation. Students learn from peers and experts as they ask, seek, and find answers to their questions in an environment unbound by disciplines or domain expertise. The space is run in partnership with students, and they are empowered to influence service and space design, structure, and policies.
Reporting to the Head of the ISD, the Undergraduate Learning and Research Librarian actively participates in the Library’s reference and instructional services—providing in-person reference, virtual reference, individual research consultations, and in-person classes, and creating instructional content. This librarian also collaborates with colleagues across the Library in various areas (e.g., Digital Literacies, Geographic Information Systems, and Digital Humanities) to support undergraduate inquiry and discovery. This position plays a lead role in piloting, assessing, and designing services and spaces in the CCL and applies expertise in student-centered space design and assessment across the Library. This position also plays a key role in user outreach and engagement by creating, deploying, and assessing strategies such as: digital signage, exhibit content, student art displays, and event promotion.
The Undergraduate Learning and Research Librarian connects with formal and informal communities of learners and contributes to a student-centered ethos, ensuring that novice scholars are connected to the Library’s wealth of resources and programs. A key pedagogical tactic is peer-to-peer learning for undergraduates, and this librarian will participate as a mentor in the Library Undergraduate Fellows program, which gives students training and networking opportunities and helps the Library pilot service models to support emerging scholars. The person in this position will help coordinate the Data Peer Consulting program, a collaborative effort with the Division of Data Science in the CCL; the program is an example of leveraging collaborations with campus partners to offer entry-level research support services.
Minimum Basic Qualification required at the time of application:
- Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program.

- At least two years of experience providing instruction, reference, or consultation services in an academic environment.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent international degree.
- Experience planning effective programs and services including designing and implementing learning-oriented, research-oriented, and technology-rich spaces.
- Experience teaching information literacy concepts and skills to undergraduates.
- Experience engaging undergraduates through outreach efforts.
- Experience with quantitative and qualitative assessment techniques or methods.
- Experience applying design thinking principles.
- Experience applying digital scholarship or data science methods.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, problem solving, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, creativity, and ability to work effectively both independently and as a team member.
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
