The University of California, Berkeley Library seeks a creative and forward-thinking professional to develop a unified approach to library technical collection support service operations across library units in order to address the rapidly evolving and changing services in support of library collections. This position represents a key opportunity to steward an integrated collection services philosophy across the library and to lead, shape and collaborate with the staff and librarians engaged in selecting, acquiring, preserving, making accessible and discoverable scholarly resources for the University of California, Berkeley Library community.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources, the Head, Collection Services Division will oversee the operational management, overall administration, long term planning, prioritization and coordination of acquisitions, cataloging and metadata services, e-resource management, preservation, and discovery. The Division Head is responsible for establishing and implementing technical collection support services policies, standards, best practices and procedures for the Library. The Division Head will lead three direct reports who collectively manage 4 librarians and 31 staff.
The successful candidate will stay abreast of national trends and new developments in all areas of collection services. In this role the Division Head will collaborate with subject specialty libraries, other Library Division Heads, Library councils, Digital Library Program, Library administration and other departments and units within the Berkeley Library. The Division Head will also represent the Library at the UC system level and in regional, national, and international cooperative programs concerning collection support services and processing.

The Library comprises 25 campus libraries, with a collection of nearly 13 million circulating volumes, almost 1.5 million e-books, subscriptions to over 130,000 journals and periodicals, and about 200 million items in its special collections, including rare materials held by The Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library, the Bioscience, Natural Resources & Public Health Library, the Music Library, and the Anthropology Library. The UC Berkeley Library actively partners with the other nine UC campuses and the systemwide California Digital Library. The Library manages the systemwide off-site Northern Regional Library Facility. The Library has an operating budget of about $62 million with approximately 325 full-time employees and 600 student employees.
Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources, the Head, Collection Services Division will:
Provide leadership, direction, guidance and expertise in collection services
The position will supervise, guide, direct and lead effective efficient collection service operations in the Library, including acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, discovery, e-resource management, and preservation. The Division Head is also responsible for planning, organizing, and managing services to meet evolving needs in best practices for acquisitions, e-resource management, cataloging and metadata, preservation, discovery and access to scholarly resources in all formats.
The Division Head provides the expertise, guidance and direction to enable successful collection support service operations. This role will work with Department Heads to assess and ensure compliance with national and local standards for e-resource management, acquisitions, discovery, preservation, conservation and cataloging and metadata for digital content. This role will keep abreast of and guide Department Heads regarding current standards, best practices, emerging technologies and will implement locally as appropriate. In addition, the position will work collaboratively across the Library to develop, guide and enhance discovery and access for purchased, licensed, and locally created digital content.
Lead collection support communications, policy and procedure development
The Division Head will guide communications pertaining to the Division’s priorities and accomplishments by sharing and disseminating information on a regular basis with technical support units and Library-wide. In addition the role will establish and evaluate existing policies, procedures and best practices, and
set priorities in acquisitions, cataloging, and preservation in an intensely collaborative environment. They will work with collection support staff, and in consultation with subject specialty libraries, governing library councils, and library administration and will represent the Library at the UC system, regional, national, and international levels, including cooperative programs concerning technical collection services support work.
Lead long term planning, collaboration and assessment for collection services and projects that advance the Library’s strategic plan
The Division Head coordinates, collaborates, and systematically assesses collection support service operations to enhance the Library’s discovery, collection development and digital strategies. The role contributes to Library-wide strategic planning, Department goal setting, and to all initiatives and projects that advance the Library’s strategic plan as well as leads the development of assessment and benchmark strategies, statistics, and narrative and statistical reports to support short and long-term planning of the technical collection support services. This position is responsible for liaising and collaborating with Division Heads who manage any decentralized technical service operations or processes, in order to ensure consistency and best practices across the Library.
Minimum basic qualification at time of application
- Advanced Degree
Additional required qualifications by start date in position
- Minimum five years of experience in an academic library.
- Minimum three years experience in Collection Support Services.
- Masters degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or equivalent international degree
- Minimum five years of demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience within a complex academic library organization.
- Minimum three years working knowledge of:
- academic acquisitions best practices
- current electronic resource management processes and practices
- preservation, conservation, collection disaster planning and recovery
- national and internal standards and best practices of digital preservation
- cataloging and metadata standards, tools, and resources
- current developments in digital content and metadata standards
- Experience in negotiating with suppliers and vendors regarding terms and conditions of contracts for the acquisition and delivery of library materials and shelf-ready services
- Proven track record in leading, cultivating and managing high-performing teams in a collaborative environment
- Demonstrated focus on organizational service, including experience managing stakeholder expectations
- Familiarity with recent developments and trends in technical services in academic research libraries in North America
- Demonstrated experience leading and implementing progressive initiatives, strategic priorities, projects and transformational change within a large academic research library preferably within technical service related areas
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, particularly the ability to explain complex concepts to a wide variety of users in individual and group settings
- Demonstrated successful organizational, analytical, project management, and problem solving skills
