Associate Dean of The Claremont Colleges Library

The Claremont Colleges, a distinguished consortium of five undergraduate liberal arts colleges and two graduate institutions, located just east of Los Angeles, California, seeks an Associate Dean of The Claremont Colleges Library.

This newly-created position offers an extraordinary opportunity for a passionate, energetic, inspiring, skilled, and experienced librarian to join its leadership team in transforming the library into a vibrant, exciting, and user-driven physical and virtual center for teaching, learning, and research.  Reporting to the newly-appointed A.J. McFadden Dean of the Library, and working closely with other members of the leadership team, the successful candidate will initially manage a comprehensive strategic planning effort that will engage the faculty and students of the colleges in envisioning dynamic new directions for their library.

In addition, the Associate Dean will have ongoing responsibility for a wide range of senior administrative leadership and management functions including:  master planning for library buildings, new teaching and learning spaces, information technology, and facilities; financial planning, budget preparation and management; communication and outreach; advancement; partnering with the Office of Human Resources to manage human resources and organizational development; programs, events, publications, and exhibitions; organizational assessment and evaluation; WASC accreditation support and documentation; and other senior administrative initiatives, programs, and projects.  The Associate Dean represents the library in the dean’s absence.  Initially, the successful candidate will supervise 1.0 FTE administrative assistant.  Upon completion of the strategic planning process, other areas of supervisory responsibility will be added to the portfolio

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will bring a deep understanding of and significant experience in addressing the major challenges facing academic libraries today, including rapid changes in technology and scholarly communication; the storage and delivery of analog and digital information; creative and efficient use of physical spaces; and changing perceptions of their role as campus partners and collaborators, intellectual and community centers, and providers of educational and research services.  The successful candidate must have demonstrated managerial experience, including financial, human, and physical resources, in a complex academic or research library setting.

Required

  • ALA-accredited MLIS OR equivalent education and experience (subject expertise combined with professional library education and/or experience).
  • Substantial experience with developing programs intended to provide innovative library services to undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and staff
  • Close understanding of the academic library’s role in teaching, learning, and research.  Demonstrated knowledge of higher education and curriculum.  Record of outreach to faculty and academic program leaders on campus
  • Minimum of three years of management experience in an academic or research library and demonstrated evidence of progressively increasing scope of responsibility
  • National profile in the field of academic librarianship, including a record of participation in professional associations and a record of scholarly engagement, typically demonstrated through publications and presentations
  • Demonstrated understanding of and receptiveness to the uses of established, new, and emerging technologies in delivering innovative services in academic or research libraries
  • Ability to help develop and articulate a vision for the Claremont Colleges Library and to provide leadership to achieve organizational goals and priorities.  Demonstrated leadership and analytical skills, creative and innovative problem-solving skills, and a strong commitment to service excellence
  • Evidence of success in strategic planning; involvement in planning for library buildings, new teaching and learning spaces, information technology, and facilities; and introducing and managing change in complex environments
  • Demonstrated record of successful engagement in financial planning; budget preparation and management; communications and outreach; advancement; human resources and organizational development; programs, events, publications and exhibitions; organizational and programmatic assessment and evaluation; and providing support and documentation for accreditation
  • Ability to be proactive, flexible, and collaborative as a leader and senior administrator to accomplish strategic goals and priorities
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in supervision, including hiring, orienting, training and development, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary
  • Demonstrated involvement in advancement activities, including government and foundation grants and/or individual gifts and corporate awards
  • Outstanding organizational and analytical skills to lead multiple projects.  Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-related information technology applications
  • User’s knowledge of standard computer office applications, such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software
  • Excellent organizational, time, and project management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work creatively, collaboratively, and effectively both independently and as a team leader and member.  Demonstrated skills in promoting teamwork among colleagues
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and ability to work with a diverse student and faculty population
  • Capacity to thrive in the exciting, ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a world-class academic institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities

Preferred

  • Additional advanced subject degree or MBA
  • Experience of working with academic consortia

The Claremont Colleges
