Job Description
The Web Services and Community EngagementLibrarian, under the direction of the University Librarian, takes a leadership role in the vision, design and management of an evolving library web presence to meet the needs of the students, faculty, and staff of the University. The successful candidate will combine advanced technological skills with a strong public services orientation and a commitment to learning new skills as the need arises. The focus of the position is twofold: outreach that is both broad and deep, with the goal of developing a thorough understanding of the needs and expectations of Alliant’s community of researchers; and the technical skills needed to manifest those insights through the development of innovative online services using the library website.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to providing high quality service to all constituencies of Alliant University. S/he will exhibit the highest professional standards and ethical principles and will be committed to the tenets of Alliant University’s Mission and Vision.

Responsibilities
1. Outreach Duties
§ Gather information about library users current practices and future needs through surveys, focus groups and other appropriate means
§ Identify and pursue opportunities for librarians and faculty to collaborate on research and jointly publish results
§ Develop online courses in information literacy, research methods, and related topics
§ Partner with faculty to provide library services tailored to the needs of individual classes and students each term
§ Evaluate and expand library services to international students

2. Web Services Duties
§ Develops policies and procedures associated with web services in consultation with the librarians
§ Designs and implements web interfaces using a user-centered approach; applies UX (user
experience) and IA (information architecture) principles to connect disparate web applications and
websites into a cohesive whole within a larger organizational structure
§ Tracks current and upcoming web-based trends and drives Library response to these trends in the
context of the Library’s mission

3. Reference Duties
§ Assist with reference and informational questions, in person, by email and over the telephone.
§ Assist patrons in locating research materials and follow through to insure success in finding and evaluating materials.
§ Demonstrate, instruct and promote information literacy via the use of Library Catalog, research databases and Internet.
§ Teach search strategies for research databases, and Internet.
§ Conduct library tours and orientations.

Supervises student employees during the evenings and weekends.

Education
Master’s of Library Science or Master’s of Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited institution
Technical Skills
Advanced information technology skills including experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc) and HTML
Experience
1-2 years reference experience with online and print resources
2 years professional web experience
Demonstrated experience in library website design and development, including the building and/or integration of a variety of Web applications and Content Management Systems
In-depth knowledge and demonstrated skill with HTML/CSS
Other Requirements
§ Strong communication, analytical and organizational skills.
§ Ability to make sound decisions with minimal supervision
§ Build and maintain quality relationships with students, faculty and staff
