Instructor, Digital Assets Management (East Bay)

The Diablo Valley College Library Technology program is seeking an instructor to teach a new class in our program, Digital Assets Management: Tools and Techniques. The class is an introductory survey course designed to acquaint students with the world of digitization projects including the hardware, software, workflow and organization, metadata schemes, and other components of this work.

The course will require 36 hours of class time which can be a combination of face-to-face (at least 60% of class time) and online sessions. DVC’s Library Technology program is a career technical education program dedicated to training library technical assistants for careers in a wide variety of library and information centers. THE POSITION: Cal Poly’s award-winning Kennedy Library invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of Library Services. Kennedy Library is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing campus-wide information resources and related services with an annual budget of $7+ million and approximately 50 faculty and staff. The library has five departments: Academic Services; Access, Operations, and Administrative Services; Information Resources and Resource Sharing; Library Information Technology; and Special Collections and Archives.

Reporting directly to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Programs and Planning, the Dean of Library Services is responsible for the direction, development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of library services in order to meet the scholarly and intellectual needs of the university community and its service area. The Dean is the chief administrative officer for the Library and works collaboratively with the six college deans, the Vice President of Research and Economic Development, the Dean of Graduate Education, the Vice Provost for International, Graduate and Extended Education, the VP ITS/CIO and Directors/Managers of IT services, the Director of the Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology, and members of the Dean’s Advisory Council. Overview:

The Henry Madden Library obtains, organizes, preserves, and promotes the use of materials of all types to support the University’s mission to educate and empower students for success. The Library, staffed by over 60 professionals and paraprofessionals, holds over 1.4 million print volumes, has digitized over 80,000 items, subscribes to over 300 databases and electronic resource packages, and has established an institutional repository (IR) to preserve the intellectual and cultural output of the University. The Library includes collections that focus on music and media, K-12 curricular materials, children’s literature, and maps and government documents as well the Special Collections Research Center and University Archives.

The Digital Services Division in the Henry Madden Library includes the Metadata and Resource Description, Electronic Resources, Digitization, and Information Technology units.

Position Summary:

The major duties of the job include:

  • Contributed cataloging of all formats, including electronic, print, and special formats
  • Adaptive copy cataloging of library materials in various formats, including monographs, serials, DVDs and government documents, which may include data CDs and microforms
  • Updating and maintaining bibliographic records in the library catalog
  • Adding items for new materials
  • Transferring orders between bibliographic records

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Digital Project Archivist to digitally process archival collections related to the Japanese American War Relocation and Confinement that have been identified as priorities for online access. This is a temporary, two-year appointment. The successful candidate will have experience in digital collection processing, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, familiarity with digital project management and web and new media strategies, familiarity with library standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strong communications skills.
