This position is part of the Library’s senior management team reporting to the Dean, of Academic Resources.

 

The Head of Collection Management oversees $1.3M purchasing for new Library materials, manages a department of four who acquire and make available for the college community 3,000 – 5,000 books, standing orders and media resources, 90K journals and over 200 databases, with over 5,000 orders and 1,000 invoices approved annually.  Responsible for planning, goal-setting, problem-solving, and evaluation, including assessment of staff, vendors, processes, and procedures.

 

In addition, this position leads the Collection Development Team, collaborating with 11 librarian subject specialists. Allocates and manages a complex, multi-disciplinary annual budget.  This position plays a key leadership role, serving as the Library’s liaison to various campus committees, constituencies, and external organizations, particularly consortia.

 

Provides reference desk service, including weekends and evenings, and serves as a subject specialist for collection development, instruction, and outreach to one or more academic departments or programs (to be determined).

 

Requirements:

  • MLS or MLIS required. Prefer a second master or an advanced degree.
  • Minimum 7 years professional librarian experience, academic setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and lead successfully in a team environment.
  • Substantial experience working with publishers and information providers, a solid understanding of the marketplace and trends.
  • Successful collection development experience, particularly a solid track record managing collection funds, preferably to support multi-disciplinary fields.
  • Experience working with library consortia and vendors, particularly for electronic resources, including license agreement negotiation.
  • Substantial experience with major integrated library systems in some aspect of collection development required.
  • Experience hiring, evaluating, training, and mentoring both career staff and student workers.

The Periodicals Manager (Part-time, 80%) is responsible for 15,000 online, print and newspaper subscriptions including major journal publisher package collections.  Using Innovative Sierra Acquisitions online system, periodical agent (EBSCO) online tools, Excel and document management systems,  tracks $300K in funds, orders, invoices & payments.  Enables access through Open URL and Discovery systems by keeping knowledge-bases up to date.  Provides oversight of print collections in house and in storage, and manages withdrawal projects, sharing with WEST and other periodical archives. The Periodicals Manager supervises one library assistant (1 FTE) and 3 student assistants (1 FTE). The Periodicals  Manager also supervises materials processing for all library formats, including binding and preservation activities. Reporting to the Head of Collection Management, and as a member of the Collection Management Department, the Periodicals Manager contributes to planning, policy-making and documentation.

 Responsibilities

1. Oversight of Online Journal Packages: Establishes and maintains individual periodical journal package subscriptions and their associated fiscal, bibliographic, and receipt/holdings records.

2. Print Periodicals Acquisition / Collection Management: Establishes and maintains individual periodical subscriptions and their associated fiscal, bibliographic, and receipt/holdings records.

3. Fiscal / Budget management.  Tracks $300K overall in periodicals, processing, preservation, and binding and student wage funds.

4. Maintains the organization, accessibility and integrity of the collection in all physical formats, including 35K bound volumes, and 500K microforms.

7. Working with the Head of Electronic Resources & Periodicals, develops policies and assessment efforts to guide the development of the periodicals collection.

Experience & Qualifications

BA required and 3 year’s Library experience, with a minimum of one year directly related periodicals experience.

Skills/ Abilities: 

  • Demonstrates successful supervisory, budgeting and bookkeeping experience.
  • Excellent public-service outlook; ability to view periodicals management as a part of the College’s educational mission.
  • Familiarity with Library serials control systems, online catalog systems, and shared bibliographic utilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both internal and external colleagues, through collaboration, cooperation, teamwork and communication.
  • Talent for motivating and training staff, including student assistants.
  • Ability to provide clear and effective instructions and procedures, both oral and written.
  • Ability to listen to questions, and to determine the appropriate resources needed by staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets totaling more than $200,000 through meticulous record keeping, thorough checking, and analysis.
  • Initiative to plan and complete assignments independently.
  • Skilled in use of computer word processing, database and spreadsheet software.

As a member of the Library’s senior management team reporting to the Dean, Academic Resources, the incumbent will lead and manage the Library’s Access Services Department and provide reference, instruction, and collection/liaison services.

Access Services provides user-centered services to the SMC community including circulation, reserves, interlibrary lending and borrowing, and building and stacks management.  Staff includes 4 supervisors and about 10FTE student staff.  Serves on the Dean’s Cabinet leadership team and campus committees. Represents the Library with diverse campus and external stakeholders.
